Dola Poems

Carved Are Your Cottages

Carved are your Cottages (This poem is in English and Polish version)
Rzezbione chaty twoje

Carved are your cottages,
Rzezbione chaty twoje,
embroidered are your clothes.
zdobione piekne stroje.
The ballet is your dance –
Baletem taniec twój -
 your music is the forest choir.
 muzyka lasu chór.

Spruces for you are humming,
Bo tobie smreki szumia,
wind plays on rocks’ edges,
wiatr gra w krawedziach gór,
water tumbles in the brooks,
tetni woda w potokach,
spring is squirting with symphony.
symfonia tryska zdrój.

Tough mountaineers will,
Góralska twarda wolo,
 your lambs are on the meadows –
 owieczki twe na lakach,
 that's your destiny, even sometimes,
jedyna jestes dola,
all in house is wrong.
choc czasem w domu zle.

Delight of the Drummer Boy

"...Maybe they would allow me to dance,
perhaps they would leave me to dance;
let me ask the landlords,
If they would permit me to dance.."

Forty horsepower!
Sixty horsepower!!
The horses can keep their power;
Yeye Asiwaju's power is sufficient.

Who would not be amazed?
Half a century of cultural dance:
Dangling head like a pruning pigeon,
Winding waist like a spider its web,
Throwing hands and legs like javelin,
Rock-still, yet rotating like a rolling coin;
Your magic baffles me.

Delight of drummer boy,
If I may ask, tell me:
Which nut bolts your bones?
Which hinges are on your joints?
Which spring bounces you?
What makes your bone unhollow?

Your antics like a parachute:
You can fold, you can unfold,
You can swerve, you can still:
You can puff up, you can sag down.

The day you became flame
Before the high and the lowly
Behold kings and queens
Craning out their necks on toes
To have a glimpse of the cone
'Dola, 'Dola rent the air.

Sure, it is now rhetoric;
It is now superfluous to ask:
Who can dance for the king
And his crown will fall?

Letter To the Stars

This life of toil and sweat breaks my body
The thought of having to sustain pain anguishes my heart
Looking for love in the wrong place shows that am lost
When will the day come? Have to be hopeful
Atleast I know that I still have to fulfill my destiny
The distance I cover with my friends are short
Yet the distance between me and my star are light years
Don't let the burden break my backbone
We've got a headteacher running away from the media
They told me corruption can be conquered
Yet it's changing her color as a chameleon
As I close my eyes hope this message would be delivered

Each day is a blessing and a curse at the same time
Life is taken and another is given to the Earth
Is this how Mother nature maintains existence?
It's a pity that all animals are honest except for human beings
Looking to live above the dollar yet I can't get the dola at the end of the day
They say beauty before age yet the money comes first
Close your eyes as things get harder and make a wish to your star
When you feel your at the dark end., look up and you'll the stars
They blink towards you to give you hope to make it through the night

Kuna Dola

one evening in the desert the moon began to glow
far off in the western sky the sun was sinking low
i looked out on the mesa and lo what did i see
lights of blue and yellow purple red and even green

i slowly started walking to see what i could see
the lights were getting closer then a voice called out to me
hello and sir how are you on this clear and summer night
we come from kuna dola just to see your earthly sights

he said please mr earthling now dont you tell a soul
that we were on the desert underneath the moonlights glow
i said dont worry kuna i will tell no one today
they would lock me up with loonies and throw the key away
