Awakening Thoughts
Written: by Tom Wright
6/23/2018

As nightfall, has approached its time of resting,
I ponder thoughts, once found to be nesting.
A new dawn, suddenly has become attractive,
And thoughts once languid now are active;

Just as daybreak, reduces darkness to naught,
Any disturbance disrupts my train of thought.
Thoughts crawl back to their place of bloom,
Dispersing, if dissonance, moves into the room;

Thoughts are able to subdue reality for awhile,
Sometimes chasing a frown or inducing a smile.
In the dinginess of morning God has my attention,
I count my blessings too innumerable to mention.

Jack's Courage

A group of youngsters
plays baseball in the sunny field,
while a lonely kid watches
the game and he would love to join them,
but he can't run: his feet are crippled
and screaming from the wheelchair,
he breaks the dinginess of the air;
he clamors for them and feels proud
of his buddies fighting for their team,
which won them many trophies!

Does God see his misery?
He surely does and looks after him
more than anyone who loves him;
Jack, would love to stand up and play!
Five years have been long to bear,
walking on crutches and being afraid
to fall; if he made a mishap,
he could easily break a hip!

Jack fell down the stairs and damaged his kneecaps,
he was lucky enough not to break his spine;
physically is handicapped, but mentally he's fine,
unfortunately, he's no way near a cure the doctor said
yesterday, " You must wear knee braces
and try not to trip on anything and fall, it'll make
your condition much worse; some boys
have never walked again. " Jack gives him a dubious look
and courageously says, " I must believe, I can walk again
and play baseball with my classmates and make them win!"

Home Delivery

The dark dinginess of the room
And its odoriferousness;
Obviously, it wasn’t broomed
In an age, the place was a mess.
The odor was suffocating
And it needed ventilation.
Unfit for a human being
and beyond my expectation.
“One lives in this filthy rat hole?
God! It’s an insult to a rat.
The center for disease control
wouldn’t enter this place.” She sat
alone, half naked from the waist
up on an overstuffed green chair
that’s when I got to see her face
and was totally unprepared.
“Umm! Madam, you ordered Chinese?
I rang the bell at least three times
and…” never mind that…sit down please!’
“Sit?” I asked. “I can’t. Its noontime
And I have four more deliveries
To make; perhaps some other time”,
I lied. Damn! I hate telling lies
But exiting called for a line
Regardless how outlandish.
I needed to buy extra time
to escape this kettle of fish.
“Madam that will be six dollars”
‘Six dollars, don’t you want a tip?’
“Yes!” trying to avoid her stare.
“I’ll come back after my last trip.”
She handed me the six. ‘See you!’
Then I hurried out the door, “Phew!”

Caged Hope

Caged Hope

The window cool to my face as I lay my head against it
the closeness reveals the dinginess and chipped paint
showing many seasons forgot

A small robin bounces in the charred yellow grass
hoping against hope to find a meal in this dry, desolate land
looking as weary and depressed as I

Noticing me looking through the glass,
somewhat curious or maybe in disdain he sides his head
and takes to flight, something is sure to be over the next hill

Escape all in flight, renew hope
silence overtakes the noise below
climbing higher as the wind cools, refreshes

Yes ,just over the next hill
all will be wonderful, all problems solved
new start, new scenery, all forgotten

My finger making circular motions on the window
pulls me reluctantly from holiday, but for a moment
I was there
