from top to bottom, like a
root,
she stretched across the entire
canvas,
eyes, petals, closed
~ arms ~ melting ~ beewax ~ liquid ~ imitating
water ~
outside the
frame, you could see
her stretched legs
white,
snowflakes
her flawless body ~ it
seemed to expand
right
before your eyes, like
a deerskin stretched
on a wooden log wall,
in a hunting lodge,
and
to keep from falling, she was clinging, here and
there, to a few nails, as if she
was a spider that underscored the
importance of
roots,
*(and, what if this power weakens, even when you are on a canvas?
and what was held together can fall apart like a silk veil blown by the wind.)

under a carnelian sky, sand massaging the soles of adorned feet
the romantic warrior observes the heavens
everything must be in alignment, total peace
dressed in breast plate bone, draped with jewels
sacred beads resonate
observing the horizon he is smiling that the gods are pleased
they have created an illuminating moon guiding to that holy place, pinpointing where love is to be found
silently outstretching his arm beckons her to come, and embrace the illumination
she descends on a staircase of stars
fluid deerskin gown, sea pearls woven in her thick hair
regal yet soft
her bejeweled choker resonates as she stands before him
bone of adam
silence
placing her hand in his they walk, beat of drums, ancestors past, ring in their ears
two sets of footprints engraved in sand
the stars witnessed their love while the third set of footprints danced in joy

On the first day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
a Partridge in a pear tree.
Truly a miracle was he
cloaked in a robe of deerskin
as he walked the aisle to me.
My Christmas groom ...
The forest was a blaze in white.
The ancient orchard glistened.
The sun shone so very bright.
Roses bloomed upon his cheeks ...
I walked to him in gown of green
a memory of summer past,
balsam draped the winter scene.
Ice hung from the trees like lash.
A grounded bird took wing to see
and lit upon the lowest branch
of a naked gnarled pear tree.
The Holy ghost was hear you see.
Alone we stood, just he and I
to feast on earthly beauty
married beneath a holy sky.
Anything is possible you see
when flightless birds can fly.

Brother of the Quill
Join me in a dance
For mother sings nightly
And father sleeps within a trance
Deerskin feet
they'll never hear our steps
Through hemlock and the fields of wheat
All night long we will dance
Moon Mother lights our way
And our ancestors shine as bright stars
We will run as the wolves
And sing from our hearts
Brother of the Quill
Join me in a prance
We will shoot stars with our arrows
And wish for another dance
Deerskin tents
They'll never hear the swish
Of when we sneak back in
And fall asleep before Father wakes again
