Premium MemberCall Me Columbo Please

I watched Columbo season after season,
Amazed at how close we were in unkempt appearance,
Disregard for fashion, comfortable in the same clothes

He had a soft non-threatening way about him
The perpetrators were never worried,
Sure they could outsmart this hayseed

He would have them explain things until he got them,
acting like he was slow, so they would have to dumb it down
Actually, he was listening for their mistakes

Just one more thing, he would say, walking back into the room
That is when I knew he had somehow figured it out.
It was like watching a grown up Encyclopedia Brown

It thrilled me week after week after week
He appeared non-threatening, unassuming
putting them off guard.

Realizing that the most common acting person
Is possibly the most brilliant is incredibly reassuring,
and empowering.

In the Moment

I get lost in the moment watching and reading about certain mysteries
48 hours is a particular show where I feel like I'm at the crime scene
and the head line news on the tube and especially the internet
where the facts don't always add up is the ones I cannot forget

Especially the ones where they say no foul play was involved
the case was opened and closed so fast they quickly say its solved
claiming the case is a suicide I try to be a sleuth like Columbo
where red flags go up in my mind and there's more I need to know

Combing and pouring over the few clues I end up scratching my head
and wonder why these were the only facts the public was fed
where you know there are holes in the story and its still a mystery
frustrated you try to let it go thinking ambiguously

In my mind I try to see exactly what happened that fateful day
who the victim was, their circumstances, and if there was foul play
specifically the cases where the victim had suddenly disappeared
turning up dead weeks later in a remote spot as we had all feared

This murder mystery moment arouses my inner curiosity
an amateur sleuth searching for answers that finally satisfies me.

Five-O Cool Cats

Tony
Joe
Frank
Theo
These iconic names,
for those who don’t know,
are four cool detective cats ...
television Five-O

Mr. Barretta
Sgt. Friday
Lt. Columbo
T. Kojak ... who loves you, baby!
These Five-O cool cats,
they always make a righteous arrest
Badge of honor
pinned to a bulletproof vest
Blue skin
and a silver star heart
Good always gon win in the end,
that’s the favorite part

Tony Barretta says:
Don’t do the crime
if you can’t do the time

Joe Friday says:
Just the facts ma’am,
ditto says
his partner officer Gannon

Frank Columbo says:
There’s just one more thing
I gotta do ...
I didn’t come to ask anymore questions,
I came to arrest you

Theo Kojak says;
No if, ands or maybe ...
(sucking on his lollipop)
Who loves you, baby!

These four Five-O cool cats,
they roll with a righteous bounce
Whether you be white or black,
if you act rat criminal,
these Five-O cool cats will pounce

Vaughn

He was an exceptional actor but now he's gone.
The man who I'm speaking of was Robert Vaughn.
Vaughn starred in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and twice on Columbo.
He starred in Escape From Witch Mountain and The Towering Inferno.
He guest starred in Hotel, The Magnificent Seven and The Love Boat.
He made a few appearances on The A-Team and Murder, She Wrote.
Millions of people are sad because Vaughn is dead.
It is terrible to lose an actor who was so talented.
I became his fan over thirty years ago when I watched Superman III.
He was a legend and when I learned about his death, I was not pleased.

[Dedicated to Robert Vaughn (1932-2016) who died on November 11, 2016.]

Columbo Isn'T On the Case

I committed murder and I have bad news.
Columbo is on the case and that means I'll lose.
Columbo always catches people when murder is the crime.
He always uses his skill as a detective but not this time.
I just went inside the Police Station and conessed that I'm guilty.
Columbo is hopping mad because he won't be able to catch me.
This cigar smoking cop is so mad that he's starting to shout.
A murder was committed and he didn't get to figure it out.

A Doctor's Revenge

When I did him wrong, I knew that he'd try to get revenge in the future.
He was a doctor who operated on me and he used the wrong suture.
When I met my wife, he and she were involved.
During my heart valve operation, he deliberately used a suture that would dissolve.
He used dye to make it look like the kind of suture that is permanent.
Another doctor discovered his crime and prison is where he went.
Two years ago another doctor fixed my heart with another operation.
I'm happy because my death would've caused my family devastation.

(This fictional poem was inspired by an episode of Columbo.)

Farewell Falk

I have something to say and it isn't just talk.
We lost an actor who was named Peter Falk.
He always beat the bad guy at the end of each show.
Falk did an excellent job as Lieutenant Columbo.
His acting ability left many fans in awe.
He also did a great job in 'The in-laws'.
I began watching Columbo in 1989 at the age of seventeen.
The first show that I watched was the one with the guillotine.
His health deteriorated and it was too much for this brave man to sustain.
Before he died, he couldn't even remember Columbo because he was in such pain.
Peter Falk starred as Columbo from 1968 to 2003.
He was a great actor and I hope everyone agrees.

Johnny Cash

(Dedicated to Johnny Cash who died September 12, 2003.)

You were a great singer who died in 2003.
My favorite song of yours was the General Lee.
That song was recorded many years ago.
I liked watching you guest star in an episode of Columbo.
Your wife died just a few months before you did.
You had a great marriage and a wonderful kid.
You were a great singer and a good actor too.
If the world lasts for ten million years, people will still remember you.
