Trials Into Triumphs

Often in this turbulent world
Harsh trials seem to dominate
Instead of love and compassion
There is often bitterness and hate

Disappointments bring us to our knees
When we try to do that which is right
Then we cry out to God, - - "Why"
Have I failed to walk in the light ?

But when we consider experiences
Of great Bible characters of yesteryear
It was when they were faced with trials
That God delivered them from their fear

Consider Abraham and his son
Consider Jonah's plight at sea
Consider Daniel in the lions den
Consider that Paul in jail, was set free

Triumph, usually is the product
Of adverse and unwelcome trials
That God "uses", painful circumstances
To buoy us "through", treacherous miles

So, - may He help us, to not grow weary
When these conditions come our way
Trials can be turned into triumphs
Victory awaits, - at end of day !

Half Mast Flag

In the parking lot, I sat observing
The flag over the shopping mall
I noticed it flying at half-mast
A famous person, it sought to recall

The impact they had on society
Affected people, far and wide
Adored or rejected by the masses
Many in this person did confide

Few in society attain this status
So it's imperative to take note
When observing their credentials
Just what kept their name afloat

When Jesus died on the cross
Was this event really observed
Was it noted by multitudes
Did He get recognition, He deserved

Today, His banner should reign above
Rooftops in every nation
His sacrifice on Calvary's hill
Gives me solace in meditation

God grant that I may hoist a flag
And always make it known
He deserves ultimate recognition
None other could our sins atone !

In Troubled Times

Political and health epidemics
Are the topic of the news
It seems each day they intensify
Authorities all have different views

Normal carefree days are gone
There's tension and unrest
Solutions, often are hard to find
It's difficult to know what is best

Actually, troubles are not new
The Bible records, in the book of Job
Verse fourteen; one and two - -
Only a few days, is mankind's abode

Jesus was aware of worldly troubles
He often used them to exemplify
Parables He gave to multitudes
That His message would be glorified

Psalm twenty-three; verse four,
Gives credence to the fact
That in the midst of trouble
God's grace can have impact

There is light at the end of the tunnel
There is peace at journeys end
The One that hangs the stars at night
Will be closer than your dearest friend

So let us stay focused on His promise
In the midst of dismay and gloom
At the end of the trail, there is victory
Remember, - - He arose from the tomb

The Shepherds Voice

There is a picture in my mind
Of grazing sheep on a remote hillside
The shepherd is mindful of his flock
Guarding each of them with pride

His watchful eye then detects
One little lamb, - that strays away
Unaware of intimate danger
The consequence of being astray

He ventures into the underbrush
With a keen eye, and familiar voice
Only when it's safely back in the fold
Can He be content, and rejoice

Our Heavenly Father, gave a parable
To signify His ultimate love
How much more He cares for you
Than a sparrow, lamb or dove

The lamb knows the shepherds voice
There is a bond between the two
No stranger does it recognize
The Master's voice, is always true

Along our journey, wolves may howl
And threaten us throughout the night
The Shepard has promised us security
We are never, beyond His sight

The Epidemic

The Epidemic
                               2 Chronicals 7:14 *
The greatest impact of the century
Unlike any seen before
Referred to, as a silent enemy
It rapidly spread from shore to shore

At first, some appeared nonchalant
To the magnitude it did present
They chose to ignore, - - facts
And deem it just another event

Issues involved more than "things"
It was about death and life
Drastic measures were exercised
Most everyone felt the strife

Everyday activities were curtailed
Authorities implemented control
All but basic essentials
Were temporarily put on hold

The epidemic touched rich and poor
A virus does not choose it's prey
The medical world frantically sought
For a way to make it go away

Did it ever occur that mankind
Has drifted away from God
In Eden, when they disobeyed
They were met with a chastening rod

A promise in God's Word declared *
A solution for people in that day
Perhaps this, - - we should consider
Lest we become a castaway

The Farmers Lament

The Farmers Lament

Sitting on the porch of a run-down home
The old man gazed toward the setting sun
As it was sinking in the west
After all his chores were done

The land, was the source of his income
He had toiled it through the years
Some of those were productive
Others, brought disappointment and tears

Stones and thistles, he did combat
Drought and famine had taken its toll
Now his body is wracked with pain
From fighting things he can't control

Many memories of, youthful days
Before his strength was gone
Kept drifting across his mind
And now today, he sits alone

Sarah, his wife and best friend
The rose of his heart, since their late teens
Last year illness took her away
No motivation, since he lost his queen

He visioned strolling along a shore
That was free from rocks and sod
Where ground was fertile, and gardens plush
As they were first designed by God

He knew the Savior had made a promise
To those who accept His will
There would be rest for a weary traveler
When he had climbed that last long hill

Nine One One

! Nine; One, One !

Red lights flashed, - the siren shrieked
As it passed me on the interstate
I slowed and realized as it sped on
They were rushing to, someones fate

An accident; a heart attack, or a fall
 Or some other unknown situation
More detail, they would soon know
   When they reached their destination

Responding to a nine; one, one call
 That attendants had intercepted
The days routine was now altered
   Plans, for sure were interrupted

The first thing that crossed my mind
As I breathed a silent prayer
  This "someone" I didn't know
Had needs of which, I was not aware

As of now, I was safe and secure
But for them, there must be pain
We never know, when we leave home
If we will ever return again

Proverbs, twenty seven; one
Is a reminder for us all
Of this, we should always be alert
Today could be, our "emergency call"

Honor the Veteran

Honor The Veteran

I saw him walking across the street
A little humped, with a touch of grey
"Veteran," was inscribed on the cap he wore
Surviving others, - that had passed away

His steps was not as agile and brisk
As they were a few decades ago
Perhaps his vision not as clear
But the beam in his eye was still aglow

For freedom and a way of life
He had stood strong and tall
Unyielding to the enemy
When it seemed there was no hope at all

A portion of his life was spent
Apart from family and friends
When the call for duty beckoned him
Serving his country, brought dividends

For the stars and stripes many died
Others maimed and misunderstood
When they returned to society
Some were rejected, in spite of their good

They deserve our honor and respect
They deserve to be recognized
In society they deserve a special spot
Their importance should be emphasised

When we stand at attention to the flag
As it waves gently in the breeze
Let us be thankful for the veterans
And remember them, when on our knees

Breaking News

Breaking News

Breaking news - - Breaking news
It flashes again across our screen
Lately it happens more and more
It seems to be almost routine

It could be an accident or fire
But more often it's a brutal act
Conveyed by hands of evil men
Against society, they seek impact

What makes it even more profound
Most often it's not against their kind
But children and the innocent
Are victims of an evil mind

It’s a basic fact, since in the garden
When mankind departed from God’s way
Animosity and sin has been the rule
Grief and strife, is the price we pay

Hatred and malice against a neighbor
Or our stance upon philosophy
Denying someone their opinion
No place for truth and God's reality

Only when our lives are yielded to Him
Will there be abiding peace
If we would apply 2 Chronicles 7:14
Then hatred and turmoil, - would cease

Where Eagles Soar

Where Eagles Soar
                        *  Isaiah 40:28-31
I view the news and read the paper
And observe so much animosity
The chain effect then seems to be -
It gives birth to hostility

I often shudder with dismay
But when the Bible, I explore
I'm reminded of Cain and Abel
As recorded in Genesis four

With greed and hatred in the heart
What more can we expect
This tragic account is an example
Of results, - if God's way we reject

If I fail to look beyond this strife
And immerse myself in the fray
On the horizon, all I see is gloom
It’s a recipe, - for doomsday

But in the pages of God's Word
I find a promise I can claim *
When evil forces are unleashed
There is victory, - in His Name

Anchored in Him, I climb above
To the plane where eagles soar
That will buoy me through this life
And usher me, into Heaven's door

Paul's Pearl

Paul's Pearl

"Take up thy cross and follow Me"
If my discipline, you choose to be
Goals for yourself you must deny
Jesus spoke to those who stood by

He knew that soon the greatest trial
Coming from those who were hostile
Would await Him at the cross
As He endured pain and earthly loss

The ultimate sacrifice He did give
That beyond the grave we can live
No greater love was ever known
Than Jesus gave, for His own

For those who choose to follow Him
At times, the journey will be grim
Just don't forget that final goal
The important issue - is the soul

Trials for most of us are small
Compared to those of the apostle Paul
From that day on the Damascus road
Material "things" began to erode

In my infirmities I will glory
As I proclaim the Gospel story
When I am weak, then I am strong
Let this be, my theme and song

Shipwreck and abuse he knew so well
Still the Gospel he lauded from a cell
But as fiery darts around him did swirl
Paul's peril, became a pearl

He's Awesome

He created the universe
Darkness and gloom, He did disperse
All was utopia, before the curse
             He's awesome !

He hangs the stars out every night
On a sinking boat, He removed fright
In a jail at midnight, He gave light
            He's awesome !

He delivered Daniel from the lion's den
When He met lepers, He cleansed all ten
He promised that He would come again
             He's awesome !

He encountered the woman at the well
Of her sordid past, He did tell
He gave her deliverance from sin's spell
           He's awesome !

He can take a broken heart
His cleansing touch can impart
Strength, - to a new life start
          He's awesome !

Never has He ceased to draw attention
Since the day of His ascension
Oh, - - - and did I mention ?
           He's awesome !

Slipping Away

They gather there most every morn
The retirees at the coffee shop
To discus events and each others ills
Politics and the new traffic stop

It is a highlight of their day
To greet each other as they dine
And so it's easy to take for granted
They're always there,- rain or shine

But then we notice - Joes not there
On the second day and more
Investigation tells us - he passed on
It's just not the same as before

As we adapt to his departure
Months later we miss Mary's face
Sadly we concede, she is gone
Only her memory - we embrace

Slipping away - - slipping away !
Dear ones that we miss so much
As the blossom of a summer flower
Relinquishes life, to winters touch

But we are reminded in God's Word
Life is but a vapor or a flower
So is the span of our sojourn here
We know not, the day or hour

But there's a promise to each one
Who is anchored, safe in His fold
The future can yield untold rewards
In a Place where, "we never grow old"

So there's consolation we can claim
When a dear one "slips away"
For them - it's just a stepping stone
To usher them from, a house of clay

The Competitor

The Competitor

Satan has competed for man's soul
Since that day in the garden
Amid all our efforts, we'd be doomed
Had Christ not granted us a pardon

"Ye shall not surely die"
The serpent did proclaim
This was in defiance of God's Word
Yielding brought, mankind shame

Lot was confronted with a choice
The well watered plain he chose
Lust of the flesh lured him away
A terrible price, from this arose

Job was advised, "curse God and die"
When storms raged on every side
Though He slay me, yet Him I trust
Whatever happens, He will abide

"Cast thyself down," from this pinnacle
Satan propositioned - God's Son
He responded with, "it is written"
To this quotation, there was none

Competition, between right and wrong
Has been paramount, through the ages
Yet every obstacle, can be overcome
A solution lies in the Bible's pages

End of the Storm

For days we were assaulted
By vicious sleet and snow
It brought life to a standstill
Many were in survival mode

Records show, it had been decades
Since such fury we had known
Just more reason to be complacent
And show how careless we had grown

Then one morning, an open curtain
Revealed bright sunlight and calm wind
There, a sigh of relief was instilled
The turbulent storm was near it's end

To me, it's a perfect metaphor
Of our sojourn in life
At times we glide on mountaintops
Then dark valleys bring pain and strife

Often after egressing from a storm
We appreciate the sunlight more
It can help us align priorities
And bring reality to the door

Though life is short, it can be sweet
If we keep the beacon light in view
By His guidance we can emerge
Into a day, - with a brighter hue

My mind is anchored on the fact
Ahead, - is a plateau calm and warm
In Heaven, there'll be eternal bliss
Truly that will be, the "end of the storm"
