A broken wing
in death’s chicane
Where pigeons fall
unending pain
A blinded flock
to circle down
As fangs await
both wolves and hounds
While far above
a falcon stalks
Vision prescient
it never balks
A broken wing
once clipped in fear
the raptors chase
—with canids near

A tale I'll tell in happy rhyme
Of Old town geezer, Uncle Buck,
His ugly mutt, well past its prime,
And of his ugly, rusty truck.
The people of the town, in jest,
And seeking winter blues to ban,
Devised a bold and fun contest -
A uniquely entertaining plan.
'Whosoever claims he owns
The most unsightly dog and truck
Will have the right to claim the throne'
A worthy prize, thought Uncle Buck.
A fair was held in early spring
On downtown lake of frozen ice
Where men from near and far did bring
Their trucks and canids to the site.
A parade ensued of vision foul
Each sight more awful to behold.
But when they saw Old Buck's they howled
'That is the ugliest one all told! '
And so, the challenge it was won -
Of all contestants, Uncle Buck
Would prove he could not be outdone
He owned the ugliest dog and truck.

CANIDS
The Fox
with cat-like slit eyes
lurking near the hen house. . . .
meow-less creature
Chihuahua-like ears
catch a sound in the bushes. . . .
hens can rest easy
a small rat scurries
with that vixen in pursuit . . .
it’s fast-food tonight
Coyotes
song of the desert -
long howls declare “I am here”. . . .
mice and rabbits hide
barking dogs in threes
unlucky mice collected. . . .
live practice for cubs
yippy yippy yip
heard among those happy cubs. . .
celebration time
The Pack
the pack starts its hunt
mountains rise up before them. . .
thirty miles to go
in dark night - dog fight
one alone - tail stands erect. . . .
yellow eyes back off
wolf faces grinning
twenty pounds of meat for each. . . .
like one hundred burgers
