Dewsbury Moor

The snow fell in Dewsbury Moor overnight,
They woke up at lunch to a horrible sight,
The snow had flowed through the broken gates,
And roads were blocked all across the estates,
The giros had still not arrived after ten,
So wailing was general within the crack den.
The bin bags piled up to the lower window,
Obscured by the grime-defying, beautyfying snow.
The wind whistled through the boarded up seams,
Of windows and roused men from opiate dreams,
While weary-eyed women with mascara'd tears,
Tend to their children, three in four years.
But the memories stay as the snow melts away,
How beautiful Dewsbury Moor looked today!

Minus Seven In Dublin

MINUS SEVEN IN DUBLIN

One christmas I spent the holidays in Ireland.
It snowed that christmas, unusual for them; and
Going back to airport, Dublin was in chaos: you know -
Roads blocked with six inches of snow,
Cars abandoned, jams everywhere. Uproar for days.
We were stopped by the cops. In panic he says,
For God’s sake get off the road, it’s seven below!
I said ok. He left. Then I continued to go
To the airport - I had to get home to Calgary
For mum and dad’s silver anniversary.
Airport was open but in siege mentality
In case the “extreme” snow caused a fatality.
All was chaos, doom, despair, worry.
Ten hours later we landed at Calgary:
No panic, streets clean, police dozing, city aglow -
With deep snow and thirty-five below.

The First Blizzard

Snow is falling heavily by the minute
from the whitest sky, which yesterday...
had me fooled for a perfect spring day.
Fall, pretty and fluffy snowflakes, fall...
floating and gracefully coming down
on the frozen hollies with empty nests.
The breath-taking snowy spectacle
can make one fantasize and dream...
oh, I'm dreaming by feeling the chill!
Little sparrows searching for shelter,
don't brave the dangerous blizzard...
step inside quickly and keep warm.
Driving in snow and ice is very hazardous,
I'm staying home and listen to the forecast...
it won't get any better as the day progresses.
How much snow will fall, I cannot predict,
and the weather man is as puzzled as I am...
it would be embarassing to be wrong again.
Sweet, hot chocolate and lemon tea are my choices,
to prevent chills from entering these unwilling bones...
before venturing outside and shovel plenty of snow.
