Summer Grass
Willowy green blades;
SUMMER'S textured green carpet...
Waving lazily.
I grew up in a house that had a huge green lawn in the backyard.
It ended at the edge of a steep hill. When I stood on it, I felt suspended
as if I was floating just above the small town below.
I remember basking in the sun on this soft, pampered suburban lawn--
hot summer afternoons made it too hot to move, no breeze, and
lizards scurrying by to break the silence, interrupt daydreams.
As I think back to being eye-level in that green blade jungle;
I think of all the feet that have crossed there.
Bare feet and boots, high-heels and the delicate hooves of deer--
All the memories that have walked away.
This winding road
I've seen before,
What a welcome sight;
My soul shall make it's flight!
Puffy pussy willows,
And weeping willows,
The sound of a dove
Sings to the Father above.
I tread some more
On this brown and green floor,
With wings of prayer
For thou art there.
Then with much elation,
I bow in adoration,
For there on the ground
Look what I've found,
Mayflowers galore
On this brown and green floor,
I knew there was more
My Lord had in store!
Written March 21, 2006
With much snow on the ground I was deeply touched that in the bare ground patches
MAYFLOWERS were blooming.
Makes me praise our God of Creation!
Hollyhocks are among my favorite flowers.
I am watching each season as those green towers
ascend towards the vividly blue summer sky.
Slender stalks with green spikes climb quite high.
The broad, rounded leaves capture the sun’s daytime rays.
From the spikes, bright flowers protrude in a few days.
The plant’s children emerge that are ephemeral.
Red, purple, or white, they are very colorful.
If you see nothing the first year, there’s a reason.
The flowers don’t appear until the next season.
When the flowers are in bloom every warm July,
garden beauty abounds that no one can deny.
