Pursuit of a Poetry Prize

If your ultimate goal is a poetry prize,
there are things you must do without compromise.
I had entered some work at considerable cost,
with no clue at all as to why I had lost.

So, I read all the ones recognized in the past,
seeking form and design for words I could cast.
That’s when I discovered a key to their prose;
illogical thoughts in unorganized rows.

Start with an outlandish, irrelevant line,
then something arbitrary to confuse the design.
Like, “In the beginning the ending was near”
or, “We basked in an ardent recollection of fear.”

Conclude with some incomprehensible phrase,
like, “The prolific embrace of our foregone days.”
Don’t finish ideas in these literary events,
and avoid any phrases that seem to make sense.

What they don’t understand, becomes a “deep thought.”
In depth they will ponder what meaning you sought.
They'll scoff if you've written a limerick or rhyme,
then cast it aside as a “waste of their time.”

I'll likely be banned, or be forced to concede,
but I'm sharing the secret it takes to succeed;
don't stress over structure, don’t fret about flow,
use thoughts you don’t have and words you don’t know.

This was a fun piece I wrote after reading a $20,000 prize winning poem about brass
braziers that made absolutely no sense.

Original Poem

An original poem could never be
throughout to be or not for thee.
What can't be words these red and blue
comparing sweets for that of you.
That words should be one lovely tree
there truley poets' should come to see.
When Christmas' form it's timely jingles
what batman smells through thoughts in tingles.
And has an author's name a Sphere
for I am not at good I'm sure.

The Ladies of the Temple

Each Sunday you find them at every church at least one in every pew
The ladies of the temple where visits from God are few
They enter in dressed to the nines their flashy clothes are worn
And beneath each painted face you find a heart that’s cold and scorned
Make sure you never cross them for there is hell to pay
If the ladies of temple have a bone to pick your way

The stories that so many tell about problems that arise
When revenge is sought and payments brought can offer ones demise
Don’t let their sweet words fool you for the meaning behind the voice
Will bring a victim to their knees in prayer before the Lord
I say this now to warn each one for I was once in twine
The curse brought down upon my head outweighed the great divine

To all out there who know too well heed the warning in these words
Please do not mess with ladies dressed to kill now you are warned
Each out for blood each out to hurt every living soul of man
I say this from a compassionate view take heed these words have said
For hell it hath no fury making Satan’s life look simple
A mistake I made when I failed to praise the ladies of the temple
