Oratory - Power of the Spoken Word

As words escaped constricted passage
of time from eons of layered myths,
legends of demi-gods thus linked,
in glowing rendition, with whisk on hand
the Orator with staff, sang the Eel to slumber.

As words from parched lips of orchids, flowed
dispersing sweet juices germinating dense spheres
of time in which history was packed in roots,
armed with psalms in measured cadences,
the Orator soothed kings and chiefs.

As words of our ancestors oiled and pampered
by prophesies of aging oracles, songs of lovers
and monotonous chants of old men...slithered
into hiding while physical wars waged, succinctly
the Orator proclaimed the heroic pursuits of warriors.

As words, precision in recitation of kinship ties
craftily sewn by political machinations of unions
vital for survival of race waltzing in purity of blue
when blood flowed thru veins of aging rocks as
the Orator cemented pacts chanting tribal honorifics.

As words, imageries of sky bursting, moon phasing sunsets pertaining to legends of my village heroes,
sweet nectars that put rhythm in his art of tongues
inspired by fruits from my garden, mine own words
the Orator in action, was he infringing my copyright?

As words, our heritage orally passed down in poetry,
set imageries prohibiting meddling with sources,
set quotations where time absolved breaches of patent,
plagiarism, for traditions dictated that the word be
secured in a cocoon of oratory ferried down the ages
by the dynamics of cultural rites and rituals.

the Orator, blessed not only as the spiritual Vessel
...but now deemed as the Spoken Word incarnate.

As We Look Toward The Sky

Zillions of specs in our vast universe, and
You, our amazing Earth, are among them!
Xanadu! For sure, we're blessed! We are here
With mysteries, deep and unknown in this
Vastness of cosmos that spreads endlessly,
Under which we exist, thrive and progress.
Thank God for our Earth, planets and stars!
Sometimes, impossible to understand—
Relating to puzzles of life, space and time—
Questions and answers, to why we are here
Pertaining to the relevance of all that's out there.
Of course when we think about the beyond,
Now, as creatures of Earth, we do wonder if
Millions of light years away are there those
Likely to gaze at their own skies; do they have
Knowledge of earthlings—we live and are here?
Justly, they have their own suns and moons—
It's not too farfetched a fact to surmise.
How and when will wanted answers explain
Great questions about our mystical space?
Forever and always is our deep wish to know.
Entwined with this endless, vast cosmic space, we
Dream of solving the mysteries that are
Called to our minds as we look toward the sky—
Bejeweled with magnificent shining stars—
And fathom the meaning of our Universe.

ALOHA to my friends in INDIA, I hope this message is received with the understanding that recent interactions have vastly expounded because many have participated with my sponsored contest and as such, there is a cause that the synergies, on the most part, is protonic. Those I've been communicating, for various reasons, all pertaining to poetrysoup.com, have represented the people of INDIA, in the greatest measure to overflowing. The women are pretty due to the extension of their beautiful souls, the men ingratiate their resolve with such a passionate outcome that they give rise of what makes "INDIA is great...", and due to witnessed efforts, they have added the words, "INDIA is great...and is greater!" And for your charming children, delight your shoulders, enchantingly. I wish only to meet as many Indians as possible, but alas, I have but one life. I had the privilege to shake one Indian hand, and that was with Madame Indira Gandhi, for she had brought an elephant from India to grace our zoo here in the islands, some many years ago--of course. Yes, Hawaii is beautiful I suppose, but in a way, the islanders do not exist, for it has mountain ranges for hearts to climb, flowery valleys for romance to blossom, sparkling rivers to mirror your charms, beaches with surging waters that tantalize souls it embraces, yet, you will never see me or my fellow islanders, for we have faded and became part of its scene, with the sole purpose to sustain our gracious place in a way that it was designed, just to attract beautiful people to feel our spirit's that are now part of its landscape, welcoming them with Aloha, to our souls within our shores.

Premium Member To My Mother

My mom does be a shining lady, one among a million
She had been the one giving me support ever since I was born
She was the one to spark off in me, my love for books
She was the one who would read to me, stories, to help me sleep, at the fall of dusk

Yes, without my mom, I would not be who I am today
A Health Officer, mind you, with matters pertaining to hygiene, she does not play
Always severe and strict with me and my siblings
She does take loads of care in food handling

She does be my pillar in life
She does be the one to shoulder my grief
She does be my friend
Yes indeed, ever since I was a child, she had held my hand

She is, though, a lady who had not had choices
Living in a rigid and strict culture, she could not even raise her voice
Rather, she was imposed upon
Rather, she was trodden upon

Intelligent, she still loves learning
Even if her topics be related to health or to learn typing
She is ready to sacrifice anything
To get a bit more of enlightening

She is the one because of whom I am the way I am
Bold, feminist, a twice thinker, dealing easily with any storm
Yes, for I have seen her waging battles
And yes, I have seen her emerging winsome

My mother does be the one being I do love the most
Yes, of her good looks and her witty ways shall I always boast
My mother, my gift, the one to care for me
Even if I do be one very stubborn and difficult lady!

Born she was at the time my country was still under colonization
Skim and scarce is her level of education
Yet, she is so brave, so hardworking, so courageous and so ambitious
She did teach me to be, with matters pertaining to life, one so cautious

She lives still today, for that I am thankful
Without her, life would surely not feel so joyful
She loves dining, wining, dancing and partying
Yes, a real lady she is, one of the best, indeed!

Chekhov's Gun

"If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired." -- Anton Chekhov

Chekhov declared that it's clearly imperative
That a gun given billing must duly be fired.
The bullet obligingly cinches the narrative,
Sating the thirst that the gun first inspired.

Yet the world is awash in objects inutile,
Which clog our disorderly narrative streams.
So why should a playwright adhere to so futile
A diktat pertaining to props in a scene?

Myself for example, habitually arming
The darkness that swaddles me, inkily deep,
My mind so occulted its doubly alarming
To grasp the black Kimber, now sprung from its keep.

The prop having found its way on to the stage,
My untethered demons start chorally keening,
Quite certain they know what the gun must presage:
That this is the moment that holds all the meaning.

Now that time is getting shorter for the arrival of my new home it has put quite a
stress on Shirlee and Fred. They have had to do rearranging out at their place in order to
accommodate my permanent cabin, besides working their full time jobs.
Friday Shirlee was off and there were some fittings on the skelgas tank that had
to be replaced before it could be put to use. (Now my days on the Nebraska and South
Dakota plains I seem to remember our source of heat was called skelgas even though it was
actually propane. Well that was a day ago I think) We also had errands pertaining to the
mobile home so I went out and picked her up and we went from there. Actually she has just
started working 4 days a week, ten hours a hours a day with Friday's off so we usually have
this day together anyway.
I started the day with a light breakfast (so we could eat in town) and loaded the
things I needed to take along and pulled out of the driveway. As I reached the end of our
street and was gazing into the sun waiting for the cross traffic to pass I was startled by a
sight in the distance. Probably a quarter mile ahead of me was a lake and as a large truck
passed by on the interstate I was shocked to see... The Loch Ness Monster slowly working his
way horizontal with the lake shore. Totally stunned I was then confused as to which road I
should take out to Shirlee's. Finally I decided I would take the interstate. As I passed under
the interstate to reach my turn off I breathed a sigh of relief as the monster turned out to be
a tractor with double appendages raised in the air and a cab with a rounded top. I started
laughing so hard I almost missed the turn off and had barely gained control as I reached the
house. After greeting the dogs I proceeded to do a little chore as Shirlee went outside to do
some of her chores. When she returned I was all but rolling on the floor reliving the earlier
scene. I had shared it with the dog while she was out. After urging I finally told her of the
incident. Eye brows raised she said, " I wondered for a minute as I didn't realize they were
land animals too." With that we departed for town.

My Brother James

We only talked sanely a few times,
About how he also had a condition like me,
Although my dad, who was a pharmacist, when James was small wouldn’t say,
Obvious as it was that he had CF from his cough n' inward-growing finger-nails,
Dad decided to bypass the issue, medicine to assail.

I have CP, and needed James’s comfy chair to read,
It was given to him in misogyny because it was blue,
About three months before he died he said,
I could have it, and must convince mum and dad that it was mine;
They were Christians, fundamentalist and strict,
And so sometimes there was an elephant in the room,
Between me and James, about the physical.

Death is inevitable, but to them it was only a maybe for James,
When the doctors had said that 14 was the expectation,
I prepared myself for the worst well before it occurred,
As an atheist I am, with no qualms or hesitation.

James wanted for me the best, happiness and friends,
Wanted me to do my best physically, ‘cos he knew I wanted that too,
But he also suspected that I would grieve for him rightly,
Not like a sentimental fundamentalist who believes that Jesus is risen,
But as a steadfast atheist who knows what has been given;
So he knew to remark on my immediate life without him so as to adjudicate.

I cherished Christinna Georgina Rossetti’s poem, Remember,
Long before and for some time after James’s death,
And quietly held in my heart the loved-one’s good wish,
Mum used to think that sometimes I was cold as stone,
But really I'd faced the fact that James was dead and gone.

Although Rossetti was by no means an atheist,
Her poem recites the mantra of the bereavement psychologist,
That to get on with your life as best you can,
Is a right, the partner of grief, and the pathway for your lone self;
In the Bleak Mid-Winter puts Christ as relational to nature,
Instead of pertaining nature to Christ, as it is normally,
And so we must partake of it within our space and our pasture.

Relay For Life

Relay for Life

Hence forth, evermore and in every essence
Poor must be if pertaining to peasants
Colossal moon can have several crescents
Best things occur if God's in your presence.

God and me together may have many sessions
In them is where I will learn a lot of lessons
In God won't worry about making impressions
Or from Him wanting to obtaining any obsessions.

And of course, I always know that God is great
What I have learned from Him as of late
Has been highly contested and in debate
Should we have no children and be celibate?

Mary was celibate but there was a celebration
She dad been a virgin in every indication
Who gave birth to Christ and we have a station
For each part of cross and its participation.

To further add much fuel to the flaming fire
Jesus within Him did have a demanding desire
To remind whole world and all of its entire
Will be glorious exhibition when He would expire.

So to improve world conditions, what can he do?
If He were to be followed by both me and you
And we prayed to Him every Sunday in a pew
We will walk a straight line not going askew.

In well-made meal make sure there is spinach
After it is all eaten up and you finally finish
When desperate, sins disappear after they diminish
And run in relay for life and God will replenish.

Premium Member Centenarians

A few years ago, I was privileged to attend a birthday party for a centenarian.
During the ceremony, there was a procession, and each of us greeted the honoree. When I greeted her, it did not appear that she recognized me, but I was ok with that, because I had met her many years prior. I was simply honored to be in her presence.

About a year ago, I visited a lady in the nursing home who was 104 at the time. She has since passed on, but I felt something special about meeting her.
I have always had a special connection in my heart toward older people,
and being acquainted with a centenarian does something special for me.
I sense that God shares such ones with us for his own loving purpose, and
if I can consume something from them, I am blessed and the better for it.

Another centenarian that I have known most of my life turned 100 this year.
It has been 50 years or more since I last saw her, but I remember her well
as I was growing up in the community less than ten miles from her. Her husband was a kind and hard working gentleman, and they had lots of children as did my parents. I saw her on occasions when she visited my mother, and I was very observant of her active community and school involvement. I noted that she was dedicated and active in matters pertaining to the betterment of people. As I look back over the years, I now see her as a gentle giant and a lady of peace so fitting of the name she bares.

It's just past 4 AM as I write this, and I'm writing because after awakening for a bathroom visit, I could not return to sleep. Such as endearing lady, a countenance most beautiful and gentle. Having known Mrs. Peace since childhood, I feel honored that such a one aided in my sleeplessness and
took charge of my memory this early Wednesday morning. I am inspired by her life and enriched by her longevity.

Fiber For Our Life

Now that I'm in my 50's and over the hill,
I'm getting more and more medical mail,
lots of it pertaining to a certain ailment,
this one being in the can't poop department,
claiming that some people have it stuck in their colon walls,
and that they are walking around like a ticking time bomb,
well I for one don't want to be around when that person explodes!
Also saying that these fecal reservoirs are going to kill you,
I just look at the colon pictures and sort of bristle,
thinking why are they sending me pictures of colon crap,
why I'm a vegetarian and clean as a whistle,
I start the day eating cereal called Fiber-one,
then for lunch have a hugh salad with lots of onion,
for supper its fiber rich 15 bean soup,
and when I go on trips bring my fiber pills along,
thats why every chance I get I stop at a restroom,
so doc if you schedule me for a colonoscopy,
you can see for yourself that
I might well live to be way over the hill,
unless of course I o.d. on my fiber rich pills!
