edgar allen poe: he died on my birthday, but before i was born and before the beginning of the civil war. he might have enjoyed the pale horse of that day, as he endured the hellish bells, bells, bells & belted the raven’s forevermore.

sylvia plath: loved to take blood baths, hated tulips, and was born twenty days after my birthday, many years before. i was introduced to her bell jar in my high school years.

james mercer langston hughes: he invests in the euphrates, congo, nile, mississippi (m - i- double “s” - i - double “s” - i - double “p” - i) rivers, where his soul has grown deep.

robert lindley: the soup’s own dark poet, emotions worn on his sleeve,
he watches the waters flow from the riverbank & returns from ashes and dust

darkness falls and delivers

The Paperboy

I come and I go.
	No one sees me
		but the wind.
I come and I go.
	No one hears me
		but the wind.
I'm here and I'm there.
No one knows where I am
		but the wind.
I'm there and I'm here.
	Everyone knows where I am
		but the wind.
In the dark of early morn
I place the papers on the mats
and no one hears me but the wind.
In the dark of early morn
I slip away from the houses
and no one sees me but the wind.

Published in the Mercer Island Reporter June 28, 1966
In the sixth grade and for many years after I had a paper route delivering the Mercer Island Reporter to about 100 people. I got up at 4:30 AM twice a week to do my duties. This poem represents my reflections on slipping unseen from house to house before anyone is awake.

Johnny Mercer

I wonder if Johnny Mercer
Was a prolific rehearser
He'd hit the spot
In his songs - a lot
But when drunk he was a curser

Premium Member Ain'T Throwin Myself Off No Bridges

Aint Throwin my'self off no bridges
God made the Ocean for the fish

And at the risk of soundin' religious
Suicide wont be gettin' his wish

Sister Mercer, sister Bailey,
Sing me through this

 'Nough Blues in my suitcase
To make the Titanic sink
'Nough bills in my briefcase
To make a Nun drink
Family and friends say I'm on the brink

Therapist diagnosed me with RDSD
Said, Leave two hundred dollars at the desk
Two of these blue pills will alleviate your stress

I told her I beg to disagree
"No, I don't have RDSD."

What I do have is MMSJB
(Missing Me Some James Brown)
One CD and I’ll be gettin’ down

Not giving you or your receptionist a dime.
Respectfully lady, are you out of your mind?

...An hour of Loretta Lynn
Jus' let the record spin and spin
Again and again

The Coal Miner's daughter
Miss Joplin, Lena, Ethel Waters

Miss Ella leading the choir
Miss Leontyne taking us higher

Let me wade in the Muddy waters
Just let me wade in that muddy water

She said, We can try Abilify
Zoloft or Lexapro
Said, "Oh miss Therapist, I gotta go."

She said, "If Cymbalte doesn't work
Make an appointment and come back

...Two-hundred more and I'll put you on Prozac."

And don't look for me at Church on Sunday
Will be playin' these Blues straight thru Monday

Saint Armstrong Church of Divine Jazz
Rev Benny Goodman presiding
Therapist still lookin' for me
But I'm under the pews hiding

Thank You Reverend Ellington
Deacon Gillespie
All these people tryna stress me.

Therapist said if I don't take her pills
She'll send the Coppers to arrest me

Nat King Cole Baptize my soul

And don't try to size me up for no Coffin
I only like flowers I can smell

"No, no, I wont take Desyrel."

Can't think about no dying
Until I hear Sweet Aretha sing

Until then, I'll be doing this rhyming thing

Until I've given all that I can give
Until then
 I'll live

and live

 and live

New Jersey

What does it mean to me
New Jersey
It means smell and warmth
iI……. oops wrong sort of Jersey
Here we go start again …….

Was the home of the Lenape Indians
Till the Dutch and Swedes came their way
Followed by the British who named
It after a channel island off the UK

Was the home of many a battle
Including the American revolutionary war
Who tried to oust the British rabble
Not such an easy chore

New Jersey has many counties
21 was the latest score
Morris County was indeed a pleasant one
Rich in tradition and folk lore
                   THEN
Theirs Atlantic and Bergen, Burlington too
Camden, Cape May, Cumberland to name but a few
Essex, Gloucester and Hudson come next in line
Hunterdon, Mercer and Middlesex are doing just fine
Monmouth, Morris and Ocean is that enough
Pacific, Salem and Somerset I am now out of puff
Sussex, Union and Warren …….That is New Jersey

Lord Have Mercy

Lord Have Mercy (@ Mercer & Broome)

I feel richer already
Says my lungs to my brain
The tactile orgasms and inquisitive Asians
Both ample yet directionally challenged
Growing with each thrust and lunge
My pearl is at Purl
Descending into fiber heaven
As poignant observations
Play hide and seek
Across this fanatically tethered cobble street
The runways play under everyone's feet
Each movement and stride
Gaining reason, style and raconteur
As winds slightly tremble
Kissing all the naked faces
Beauty comes as beauty seeks and gets
Welcome home, haute ones.

Premium Member Now You Know the Rest of the Story

Outline of a figure in the clouds
Evil eagle on right shoulder
Angel archer behind aiming at the evil bird...

When we are unaware, an angel is always there
Following to protect from harm
How many times a day does things not go your way?
If they had happened as you wished,
Doom would have been your fate.

Praise God it is not too late
Praise Him for the Angels unaware!

Once long years ago, our son-in-law
Was late coming to pick up the grandson
We had to go to classes at Mercer in Macon
My husband was just so upset....

We was running about ten minutes late
When we got to a place where there was
An old homeplace with two huge oak trees..
Which were right on the edge of the road
There was a traffic backup and we had to wait.

I am thinking there must have been a wreck
No not a wreck ~~One of those trees had been blown over
It lay across the road where if we had been there maybe ten minutes earlier
Well! You know the rest of the story.....

The Heart Walls of the D R Canal

Every form of life has it's walls, nothing, no one stands alone
some are trees, brush, branch, twig and wood and bark
some are mortar and stone, mere workers flesh and bone
others lay in memorials of the mind and heart of freedom's start.

Walking in the shadows of the forest growing bare
the pathway, worn and tattered by twigs and leaves of this locale
abandoned layers born of unknown, hidden architects no longer there
an opening spillway becomes a stage to walled canals.

Some harvested stone stacked upon each side
keeping water flow secure along Delaware and Raritan park roams
contained and directed from Bound Brook on to Princeton pride
away from the mix of dirt and cobblestones.

Who once walked here, where canoed and kayak waters strewn?
along this unpaved curl of hidden trails indemnity
twists and turns unfurling to a spillway hewn
where memorials now stand as markers without memory.

They say, Irish immigrants built this waterway like a well-planned quilt
some bodies buried where they worked and died
benath the rocked mortared wall containments blood built
and their hearts sought freedom without walls that today still cry,

For Craig Cornish cotest, A Wall in the Woods
10/7/2020

Background: The 70-mile Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park is one of central New Jersey's most popular recreational corridors for canoeing, jogging, hiking, bicycling, fishing and horseback riding. The canal and the park are part of the National Recreation Trail System. This linear park is also a valuable wildlife corridor connecting fields and forests. A recent bird survey conducted in the park revealed 160 species of birds, almost 90 of which nested in the park.

With its wooden bridges and 19th century bridge tender houses, remnants of locks, cobblestone spillways and hand-built stone-arched culverts, the canal is a tremendous attraction for history lovers. The upper portion of the feeder canal follows the Delaware River through historic New Jersey towns such as Frenchtown, Stockton and Lambertville. The main canal passes the Port Mercer bridge tender's house, through the charming villages of Kingston and Griggstown to Blackwells Mills.

Goodby

what do you do when you know time is running out? how do you prepare to say goodby when
you know it's gonna be the last time? you hold on to and cherrish every single minute, every
single breath. does it somehow make it easier when you know and are exspecting it before
hand instead of all of a sudden? i don't think so, at least it was'nt for me. you are able to say
to them what you think you want to say and express your regrets for things you'd wished
you not said. but there's always that something you wish you could say one more time; i love
you. and to say the very last goodby still rips your heart out. knowing they are not in pain
anymore is a comfort to your soul. knowing the one you love is in a much better place of
peace. it is the only comfort i am able to feel at this time. and with time some of the sadnes
will subside, but as long as there is a breath in my lungs, my heart will cry a tear for you. i
will miss you til we meet again. in loving memory of james m. bruce and joe b. mercer.
written for those that cancer has touched and left a
scar.

Premium Member Golden Oldies

The mellow sounds
of Lawrence Welk
are gone,
Guy Lombardo, too.
I remember when
Johnny Mercer
wrote the hits
and Dinah Shore
sang them true.
Do these names
mean nothing
to you…perhaps
The Beatles are
your cup of tea?
Then think, my friend,
and be not dismayed
for you are nearly
as old as me!

The Pocket Bus

The pocket is in the pocket
The pocket is in the purse
The purse is in the bag
And the bag is in the purse
One dollar for a dime
And one dime for a coin
The coin is in the lie
And the lie is in the coin
The pocket is full
when the purse is empty
And the purse is empty
 When the pocket is full
The call is in the store
And everyone is asking for more
Seven days of strength
is moving beyond the den
The villain is in the train
And there is nothing more to gain
One more pain, one more gain
The exodus is moving closer
And the order is making us wiser
There is no more sunset on the plain
But the helpless few, and the damage gain
The wonder and the blame is searching
For a plan to move beyond the land
Everyone is going off the land,
To join the bigger band
The threat is real
And the people are full of zeal
The villain and the mercer
The piper and the scraper
The wonder and the sellers
The shoppers and the gain
They will ask you for more
When you walk through the door
But they have nothing else left to gain.
The music is playing on the left
With a pompous tune that will end at noon
The right is on the right
And they are singing with all their might
But they are not totally right
The pocket is in the bus,
And they are causing a lot of fuss
Morning and the evening will soon be done
And the night will be on the run
Day will break with without a shame
The pain will cease
And my spirit will finally be at ease.

Rou Jia Mo

A lunar cave sheilded them
from the horrors of radation
there the Moondogs

the first ever Home World vessel

Earth a World far, far away!
Earth, there a twinkle in the galaxy.
Earth a place destined t jear the tales

Earth there beyond the

They were astronuants in space when

frustrations and stressful events that gave way
