Homeward Bound
I didn’t know, for it didn’t show for so many years.
The slowing steps, the memory gaps
The creeping years gone by.
Then one day, it came my way
The mirror doesn’t lie
It’s that woman whose wrinkles keep coming
Asking where and when, and why.
Memories fade, eyes become glazed
Only secret thoughts remain
When age overtakes us, and families forsake us,
What is left to gain?
Then bright lights meet us, and loving arms greet us,
And then we are home again.

I‘d have climbed the highest mountain
I’d have swum the deepest sea
Just to see your face my darling
This was just a dream for me
How the years they have flown by
Since you left my heart to break
I was left with such a longing
Of the love you did forsake
We had talked about our future
That together we’d grow old
You got charmed by another
And you left our happy home
I am old and I am weary
And my hair is streaked with grey
Just to see your face my darling
This is all that I can pray
Many years I tried to find you
But my search it was in vain
You’d got married and had children
And you’d changed your maiden name
I’d have climbed the highest mountain
I’d have swum the deepest sea
Just to win you back my darling
It was never meant to be
Now I’ve found you live in heaven
And are free to love once more
All I pray that when my time comes
You’ll be waiting at the door
You’ll be waiting at the door

When I asked you to the County Fair
You had just rolled your eyes and twirled your hair
Got down on one knee to plead
Come with me, baby, pretty please
We'll have a ball, I'm begging you
I will get you back, by your curfew
Holding on
I needed you
Holding on
Hold, back my tears from making
Hold, back my heart from breaking
Hold, back the time from taking
Taking you from me
Smiled like I had passed the test
You helped me up and whispered "yes"
We kissed so hard that I couldn't see
Why a girl like you, wanted me
You kissed me every car we passed
Then we made sweet love, at last
Holding on
I needed you
Holding on
Hold, back my tears from making
Hold, back my heart from breaking
Hold, back the time from taking
Taking you from me
Our first ride was the Ferris Wheel
I rocked the chair until you squealed
Kissed every time we went around
That balloon we lost, never found
That big old Teddy Bear you craved
Merry Go Round rings, that we saved
Holding on
I needed you
Holding on
Hold, back my tears from making
Hold, back my heart from breaking
Hold, back the time from taking
Taking you from me
Taking you from me

So cold is winters worry
Trepidation of the fury
Below zero trudging slurry
Walking the cold last mile
Dodging bears and trailing wolves
Through the forest of the woods
Take my hand that you should
Walking the cold last mile
We made it to the house with fire
Settle down, cosy smiles
If you had seen our feet in mire
Walking the cold last mile

Verse
When I'm weary, and forsaken
when I'm worn and feeling down
I will cast this heavy burden
far away, I'm homeward bound.
Homeward bound, homeward bound
take me there, solid ground
I will lift my eyes to heaven
while my feet turn homeward bound.
As I travel o're the highways
on the roads beside the sea
I will gaze along the byways
knowing you'll be there for me.
Through the valleys and the rivers
through the forests and the trees
in my heart, I am rejoicing
soon I'll have you here with me.
Homeward bound, homeward bound
take me there, solid ground
I will lift my eyes to heaven
while my feet turn homeward bound.
When I find you, I will hold you
and I'll never let you go
for you are my lifelong treasure
no more years of life alone.
Homeward bound, homeward bound
take me there, solid ground
I will lift my eyes to heaven
while my feet turn homeward bound.

Lyric
Through the valley, I walk steadfast
with the Lord's hand holding mine,
and He guides me and He saves me
when my path, I cannot find.
With the love
of my Father,
I can face each new day.
With His grace,
I’m lifted higher,
as He parts my skies of gray.
In the valley, wild flowers
meet my path where blue skies shine.
Some are new blooms, some are fading,
What a blessing, every life!
Through the valley, I walk steadfast
with the Lord's hand holding mine,
and He guides me and He saves me
when my path, I cannot find.
With the love
of my Father,
I can face each new day.
With his grace,
I’m lifted higher,
as He parts my skies of gray.
When I stumble, there's a mountain
rising in a golden sky.
At my journey's end, I’ll praise Him
on that mountain of pure light.
With the love
of my Father,
I can face each new day.
With his gift,
I’m lifted higher,
as He parts my skies of gray.
Oh, He clears my skies of gray.

Lyric
In the land where ancient curses lie.
I could seek my Home above the sky.
I could ask these questions, meant for me:
Why does lonesome fear enslave the free?
Why would I traverse my lonely path,
When the trail incites such fearful wrath?
When all this time I knew the Hand of God.
Would rescue me from my hollow facade.
Would I resolve to love and not to hate,
If I knew it would lead to Heaven's gate?
If I knew how my heart sought better days.
In time I'd leave my world of empty praise.
In the land where ancient curses lie.
I could swear to live and not to die.

By Your Side
INTRO
I know you think, I've gone and left you
Leaving tears to fill your eyes
I would never leave you darling
For you and I, there's no goodbyes
There's a fate that does await us
It's a fate, we can't denied
But as long, as I can love you
I'll be forever by your side
The clock was ticking, and we knew it
Time was never on our side
But true love shall last forever
and in its realm we shall abide
I will rest here in the meadow
Before I join you in the sky
And I promise that forever
I'll be yours and you'll be mine
I know for now, we share a sorrow
And in our hearts a certain pain
But we must look towards the morrow
To be together once again
The clock was ticking ,and we knew it
Time was never on our side
But true love shall last forever
and in its realm we shall abide
I will rest here in the meadow
Before I join you in the sky
And I promise that forever
I'll be yours and you'll be mine
I'll be yours and you'll be mine

HOMEWARD BOUND
DR. JAMES E. MARTIN
July 13, 2006
Based on the story of the prodigal son
After being gone for several years,
He returned home amidst many tears.
He had thought so many years ago
That he would to others his independence show.
Thinking that at home it had been so tough,
He rebelliously left with a great huff.
“I’ll show them all!” was his frequent thought,
As with his own conscience he often fought.
At first he enjoyed this new freedom he’d found,
No more would rules and regulations abound.
Finally now he was in control,
He could now go where he’d choose to stroll.
As he began the quest for those purposes of life,
He wondered why there had been so much strife.
He gradually discovered as from his stupor he awoke,
That, at the rate he was going, he’d soon be broke.
He reflected on memories he had of home
And wondered why from there he did so speedily roam.
He finally decided that to there he’d return,
And with his family his fellowship he’d re-learn.
Amazed was he that the family showed such joy
At the return of this lonely, wayward boy.
Fully expecting to be rejected by all
Their unconditional love on him did fall.
A lesson he in his absence had learned.
Something was missing in freedom he thought he had earned.
What had once been so unbearable and not much fun
He now was ready to return to on the run.

The surf, ferocious in the distance
white caps and roller coaster waves
nose-dives into the shore
sand rearranged; sea life takes cover-
the hermit crab –boroughs;
the gulls greedy, hungry - grab
remnants of human litter- their meal for the day-
and flee.
Homeward bound.
Rain-
torrents or drizzle feed flora, fauna, man
all given a pardon: one more day to live.
Mother Nature in a cathartic mood sends
the wind, chaotic, blasted, twisted;
or patronizing - to clean and clear.
Then returns the earth to serenity
and life.
Homeward bound.
Geese choreographed in flight
synchronized to fly as one
north to south in the winter
and intuitively reverse when
it’s time to breed and feed.
Homeward bound.
Lovers- finish
the evening’s repartee with a
nightcap of Bailey’s or Port
conjoined as they coo their way.
Homeward bound.
The warrior-committed to peace-
combative, defensive, protective, vigilant,
conflicted- kill or be killed.
The good soldier returns-decorated for bravery- in the box
covered in the coveted colors of the employer.
Some maimed –without limbs, eyes, mind.
The whole- return- many missing-their soul.
Homeward bound.
The dying- incontinent, incoherent, incompetent, in pain
wishes for a reprieve. Moans.
More morphine.
The death rattle gurgling through lungs
ravaged but determined
to discharge the last hooray of life.
Then, so it goes, homeward bound.

Prose Poetry
The runic pattern cast upon the ground,
That calls wandering Celt to journey home,
To sacred lands where mighty kings were crowned,
And there hearts dwell while the feet may roam,
Ancient songs of Mystery once more found.
O Celt, now sing the song within your heart,
And love the fertile lands of Mother Earth,
But leave no lasting scars as you depart,
Protect her well for future love and mirth,
Respect her mortal realms of divine art.

I am newborn,
eyes just opened...
Can you tell me where I am?
I am so cold,
I am trembling...
Can you warm me with your hand?
Will you love me?
Love forever?
Will you tend to me
so I can grow?
I am tender,
I need someone...
If you can love me
let me know.
Hallelieu...
hallelujah
hallelu-jah
to my soul's song.
Hallelieu...
I am about to go.
So, please don't forget my song.
I'm in motion,
room is spinning...
Mommy's dying,
I cry, "Don't go!"
I am so scared,
please don't leave me...
I just got here, just come unwound.
Tell me, Jesus
can I come too
if my mother's homeward bound?
I am begging, I am praying...
If you take her, take me too.
Hallelieu...
hallelujah
hallelu-jah
it's my soul's song.
Hallelieu...
So, please don't forget my song.
I just need to be with her.
I am homeward, I am homeward
thank you Jesus, I am with her.
So thankful we're together,
thankful, I'm with her.
Hallelieu...
hallelujah
hallelu-jah
it's my soul's song.
Hallelieu...
So, please don't forget my song.
I just need to be with her.
I just need to be with her....

Lyric
I can’t wait for the day I’m home,
But where is home?
Is it a past memory of childhood of the family sitting around the living room watching the TV with a takeaway on a Saturday night?
Or is it the future that’s yet to be created, a family of your own and a new place to call home?
Maybe it’s a feeling one of love and joy the kind you first created playing as a young boy?
But I believe it is not just one of the above, but them all in twined into a magical feeling, one of wonder and belief.
It is to complex for us to understand now but trust me my friends, when your home . . . you’ll know.
