new nation to craft
founding fathers sought to draft
a declaration of independence
document that made sense

Thomas Jefferson sought to free slaves
but was warned not to make waves
five of thirteen colonies
he had to appease

breaking from British rule
ignited a duel
with each colonial delegate
expressing their regret

they could not sign
they would not find
all men of equal value
heated debate ensued

withdrawn from the declaration
with misgivings and trepidation
eighty-six more years would pass
until the slaves were freed at last

Lincoln paid a high price
when he acted against advice
signing an emancipation proclamation
brought civil war to a nation

twenty percent of our population
lay dead, a chilling affirmation
we failed to see what was right
every color worth as much as white

though the war is formally over now
discrimination we still allow
Talmadge Branch was just one case *
where service was denied by race

Ku Klux Klan remains active too
wounds once healed open anew
and the battle for human rights
fear and hatred still ignites

* In 2008, Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth
had to take action against a bar in Perry, FL, when they
refused to serve African-American Talmadge Branch
unless he took a seat in a “back room.”

Premium Member Tribute To Daniel

“In this life there’s been heartache and pain”
How could I begin to find love again
Desperado walking a tightrope
I looked down and Daniel gave me hope

“The first time ever I saw your face”
Cold heart melted, longed for your embrace
Your compassion and character shone
No longer could I live all alone

“You took my love and you took it down”
Felt lighter than air with feet on the ground
A love without chains, a soul unbound
But walls closed in as I watched you drown

"In a New York minute everything can change"
Sometimes life takes twists that seem strange
A human chain was formed to find my man
Reaching up was Daniel's lifeless hand

Efforts to save, resuscitate
Proved futile to fight the hands of fate
Casket sent home, called his folks to explain
“Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane”

*Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is”
*Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”
*Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”
*Don Henley's "In a New York Minute"
*Elton John’s “Daniel”

By Carolyn Devonshire for Tracie's "Sing a Song for Me" contest.
Dedicated to my fiancé Daniel Sammons who drowned while we were swimming in a
lake near Tallahassee, FL.

Premium Member Prayers Rise Above

There are people in NC And other states proven to be abandoned from hurricane Helene

Now, Cat 5 Hurricane Milton is on the way to FL

Prayers rise above a threatening storm
where deadly wind spins ominous threats
To people, animals, property and land
It can't be stopped, people can only be saved
A challenging time it is, testing strength
An opportunity to help one another...
What will it be?
Will those in power ignore with heartless minimization?
As if they are invincible in their own powerful lives?
Well, prayers rise above them, far above their reach!
What happens now....for them, time will teach

Early 1950s In Jacksonville Fl

Wafting on the morning breeze,
During manufacturing
Our whole town enjoyed the scent.
Maxwell House Coffee.

Freshness permeating air.
Aroma percolating.
Infusing memories of…
Grandma’s coffee pot.

THE DOOMSDAY SONG
Walkin down the street,
when outa the blue
the Devil told me something
I'm gonna share with you
Best get your sinning in,
if you got some sinning left to do
It's all over! We're all gonna die.
It's all over.

Walkin down the street,
When out of the blue
Your girlfriend told me something
I'm gonna share with you.
Best get your loving in
If you got some loving here to do.
It's all over! We're all gonna die.
It's all over!

Walkin down the street
When outa the blue
Sweet Jesus told me something
I'm, gonna share with you
Best get your praying in
If you got some praying left to do.
It's all over! We're all gonna die!
It's all over!
It's all over! We're all gonna die!

Premium Member Ladies of Tahrir Square

LADIES OF TAHRIR SQUARE
She spread through our minds
In the chaos of Cairo backstreets.
And on this day
Oh how we loved that girl.
and we stopped our red Vespas at the red light
for her to cross.

We knew who she is,
In her tight jean cutoffs,
Western Wear designer jeans,
designed to change the world.
and her near waist yellow T
revealing all of the woman she could become.

We knew we would see her again and again.
Yes we got her Message
and it is Holy.

All we could do is watch her.

She knew.
But did she ever know we had our eyes on her.
When she reached the curb, she paused,
and she threw us a backward, over the shoulder smile.
Yes, she knew the revolution was overdue.
Their Arab Spring was new and here.

Ready for her rise to human right,
we turned,
we blinked,
and she was gone.
We knew it is so.
Their girls are so beautiful
sans an abaya.

Suddenly her revolution was ended.
and gone, her smile.

Those ladies of Cairo,
They were right,
They were together,
They had the hope,
and the world was on their side.

So why did they lose?
?

Ode To the St. Johns River, Jacksonville, Fl

My Saint John flow on
Through forest, marsh and town's spread
Tablecloth of stars

Conquistadors gone
The blue herons walk alone
In moonlight's silence

River and lone night
Memory is a wind's hope
Rustling swamps for gold

Let us keep our thoughts
In slow meandering lakes
The salt sea invites

Less Timucuan
Waken find us new remnants
In Ferdinand's dream

Love wilts in salt tears
The heart snakes the bush of grief
Tense as beauty stares.

Waleka, Rio
De Corrientes, Rio
De San Juan, the same

A gaudy green thrill
Peace sanctuary of births
Life from life flowing

Still at Sawgrass breast,
The Seminole blood of strength
I from Afric's tent

We the better ore
Than gleaming figment of fort
Lovers on this shore

Sea abandoned child
Scarred and aching love consoles
Tributary feasts.

O otters swim deep
Beneath the currents I weep
But a shrimp of tear

What is gone is gone
The sun makes still day's new dawn
Oceans carry on

Ships cargo joy fresh
As pines from which warblers sing
Magics of today.

My Saint John flow on
O'er fertile grounds of sweet love
Blooming moonlight still.

One Step At a Time

You have a promise
from your friend
They will be there
till the end
Cause no one else
will understand
The troubles you’ve
been through and
can’t
Find a way to just
remove
These feelings that
leave you confused
Every time you start
to climb
A wall to leave it
all behind
Each step makes you
fall and tumble
And your future
starts to crumble
With each piece that
breaks apart
Putting pain back in
your heart
Making it start to
decay
And the pieces start
to fray
You’re told that it
will be alright
Just take one step
at a time
Slowly you see that
regrets
Stopped you from
taking every step
That you need to
realize
There is no way you
can hide
From the things
making you sad
Every life has good
and bad
There is no way to
escape
So you should just
appreciate
Life and love that’s
all around
One day you’ll fl y
off the ground
And pulled over that
breaking wall
By someone who won’t
let you fall
Putting back each
broken piece
Of your heart as
they release
All the love that’s
shining through
Holding on tightly
to you
Finding the strength
you thought was
missing
With this new love’s
tender kissing

Premium Member The Doubtful Mind

Confidence and believing are two ingredients
that we all need to realise the vision
throughout life doubts fill the mind
lacking that something to make decision

Throughout life struggled in speech
stammering non fluent whatever it be
but thinking I can't speak normal like
always believing it can't be done not by me

Filled by doubts of the next word
always not able unsure tongue tied
telling one self cannot do it
all of one hopes have nearly died

On my wedding day believing I can do it
to say my vows fluently complete
this I did confident believing anew
no stammer that day it did delete

Even the speech at reception went fine
what a day to see vision realise
even just for these moments
makes one's confidence certainly rise

(This came from thinking on the following quote-
"There is no faster way to bring about misfortune than to think it is coming.
Thought is a powerful force, and it is a creative tool
that many people give little energy to --
or abandon in the face of any real threat
to safety or stability.
What are you worried about today? Why?
Rather than worry about it, would it not be
a better use of your mental time to visualize
a positive outcome? Use your mind in this way today
and you will have tapped one of the most
extraordinary tools God has placed in your hand
for the creation of your tomorrows.") - F.L. Lucan

In Case of Fire Take ---

What an interesting question to ponder. Immediately the scenario became real
There was no question in my mind. I knew what I would have to find.
…..My guitar.
I haven’t played it for ages but that wouldn’t make any difference to me. For some reason, over all else, I would have to find…. “my guitar.”
I have had proof positive. Thirteen years ago we were in a massive fire in Port St Lucie, Fl. where 42 houses burned down around us. I was on the roof watching where the fire was coming next. My wife grabbed whatever was important to her and I yelled at her to leave in the car and she did but first yelled back over the noise of the howling fire what I wanted her to take of mine. It was approaching fast. Without a second thought my response was
“The Guitar!”
She did and after making sure I was to do the same, she left. The wall of fire on two sides of us was creating it’s own wind storm. A 60 to 80 foot wall of fire coming at you in a wind is a terrifying thing! The fire was across our little street coming at us in a hurry. I jumped off the roof, into my truck and by the time I left, the heat from the fire had started the grass on fire on our side of the road. I drove through it to get out of the neighborhood looking back to see the black smoke completely engulfing our house….but that’s another story. I had …..my ole friend,
….the guitar.

(This is a true story as I mentioned on the first comment to this poem. )

Do You Speak French Well

« Parlez-vous bien le
français, Lou ? — Je ne parle pas
bien le français, Jacques. »

French-to-English translation:
"Do you speak French well, Lou?" "I do not speak French well, James."

Literally:
"Speak-you well (the)
French [language], Lou?" "I not speak not
well (the) French [language], James."

*Notice the added "space" before the question mark in the French haiku:

*And notice the French quotation marks, called "guillemets" [ « » ], used in the French haiku:

A Small Baby

A
Small baby,
Tiny and frail
Deserted he was
By all his kith and kin
Wandering the world
Alone and pointless.
No compass to guide
Him no destination to
Stop him he went
With the wind
And ate with
 The mud
Saving
 Himself
 From
                                                              Withering out and
Vanishing he survived with just the will
To make a difference after a long journey
In the world wild and harsh he could
Not stand nor sit nor move ahead
                                                           After all, he was
 Tiny
And
Small
Weakened
 By all
The
 Nature
 Too
                     Crumpled him
            With mighty cruelty tyranny of
The sun made him flinch the ruthless wind
And rain had him drench and drown
The frail little baby could not
Move
    Anymore
He
Was
Stuck
In
The mud
Helpless and isolated
His energy gave up but not his will...
He wanted to live and make a difference...
He drank it all… The mud and the sun and the water
Which conspired against him then made him alive again now...
He woke with renewed vigor and grit broke the tough earth and sprouted up
The sun and earth and water all gave in and the frail little baby grew Heading straight towards the soaring skies... He was no more weak and helpless Deep into earth and yet high into sky... Humble and modest and generous as a sage... Though courage and strength and might of warrior he has...

No One Is Perfect

this is a controversial poem but I ask for your attention...

everyone was born with an imperfection...

some people have an "imperfection" of what most call "GAY"...

and there are people who feel same sex marriage isn't the right way...

however no one has the right to say what they say...

so keep your comments to yourself and continue your day...

Obama legalized same sex marriage
and he is straight...

so there is nothing wrong with acceptance and it's never too late...

but even with gay marriage legalized
it's still a problem in some states...

some on the list are FL, UT, TX, MS, ME, and VA...

is this the dream country we live in known as the U.S.A.?...

when states are united as one, but through differences seem to separate?...

and being gay is not a disease, it's not a trait...

same sex couples are people too, so why show them hate?...

would you like it where you lived in a backwards world today?...

a world where you couldn't marry the one you loved because you were straight?...

I know I wouldn't want to be separated from my soul mate...

so what gives us the right to take same sex couples rights away?...

no one is perfect, flawless, or a mistake...

but we all should unite as one for all of our sakes...

Diamond In the Winter

Life had meaning, passion, depth and composure all shaken
together in a Neverland globe, were believing that just wanting
to be an innocent soul forever was enough...to fl y around the
starry night, fl owing over the pain, worries, darkness and
heartbrake that usually plumit you down from contentment...
life was simple…life was good...
The day and i use to be close friends, now just mere
aquaintences as it continuously mocks me by viciously
counting down my stolen hours until nightwould invade my
world...what my sunkissed enemy doesnt know is that night
and i are like jack and sally, destined to be amazing friends
forever...
Lounging upon my bed, gazing at my moonlit world while
glowing tunes swim in my ears putting my mind and heart
in a hypnotizing and theraputic intoxication...nights passing
by leaving a bittersweet sense of calmness wrapped in fear...
lost in my own nightmares that penatrate my thoughts and
overloaded memories, leaving me with an unwanted gift of
tainted love...
Stalking me with messages on my voicemail that ive lost
control of my fate...my heart vs. my nightmares...winner take
all...

Caught in a twisted game, my nightmares angling to color
my heart a shade of midnight black and blow up my soul...my
soul anxiously scheming for an exit door to escape with my
golden heart intact and pumping...hoping that my soul doesn’t
burn out from these endless tests...
objective: take me...brake me...save me
my purpose is to nostagically slay the darkness and creep it
back down to the underworld of vampires and warewolves...
Nightmares purpose to permanently imprison my heart in a
rubics cube of distain and mindlessness...
In the end it all comes down to one of lifes more
impressionable lessons, everything happens for a reason...
everything…ponder that for a moment...swish it around in
your mind, taste those lingering words on your tongue…
EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON!!
