Amidst the Farmhouses
My mother sits at the kitchen table,
smoking slowly and thoughtfully,
the TV too loud.
Those first years we had bedrooms 
we never slept in.
I had nightmares
and she preferred the ledge,
the midnight trains,
just outside her window....
