Answer Me This

Americans have overcome many great trials,
But harbor too some persistent denials.
Stubbornly clutching long-held positions,
Over time have become national traditions.
Pride in the sanctity of individualism,
Elevates in stature, creating a schism.
Unresolved core beliefs, rationalization,
Test the thinking of this citizen nation.

Answer Me This:
Why do so many use the credo that "the ends justify the means"?

Knowing that this is not always true is not a revelation.
Similarly, two wrongs do not make a right.
Provisional right and wrong are practically necessary.
Short-term gain cannot be exchanged sacrificing long-term integrity.

Answer Me This:
Why can't we resolve gender, race, religious, age and sexual orientation biases and discrimination?

Most of the world understands, we lag behind.
Nearly 7 billion people think of us as one human family.
Much of America still does not agree.

Answer Me this:
Why can't we balance individual self interest and collective interest equitably?

When individual interest substantially effects the health and safety of the collective, it must give way.

Answer Me This:
Why does our foreign policy say "my enemy's enemy is my friend"?

This faulty logic does not allow that the enemy's enemy may be another enemy.
This can lead to dire diplomatic consequences.

All these basic questions are easy to dismiss,
Eventually representing an intellectual abyss.
Our people have shown courage under duress,
Demonstrating kindness to others and selflessness.
Our ability to think, innovate, create,
Is really no matter for international debate.
The world sees our achievements one must confess,
Over centuries no other rivals America's progress.
So why, after all, can't you answer me this,
These things that we do and continually miss?

A Politician's Creed

© 2012 (Jim Sularz)

We are conceived by short sightedness,
nurtured with unbridled power.

We believe in self-interest,
and the dollar almighty.

As masters of deception and treachery,
we father hatred and misery.

We revel in our own injustice,
wallow in our lies and debauchery.

We believe the ends justify the means,
and we will prevail at any cost.

War is our flagged banner,
diplomacy is retreat.

We are judges and lock key,
and will suppress all opposition.

We shall never relinquish our fraternity,
to the higher purpose of the people.

And through their manifest ignorance,
will our aims take flight and conspire!

What Happened

They're never supposed to end, they're
supposed to last forever
Its supposed to be locked down but it's as
light as a feather
Someone could've been your best friend
forever a few years back
But now you turn and look at them and be
like "who is that?"
Friendships are seesaws, one minute
you're cool, the next youre enemies
One minute you're fightin', the next
Drinkin' Hennessey
Facebook friends same people that'll rob
you
Same people who'll start huggin' you then
try to mob you
People lie when they say friendships
always last
Now seein' someone you would've given
your life for is like a blast from the past
Wise words were told by Machiavelli and
Kanye but who's will last longer
One said "the ends justify the means" the
other, "That don't kill me, Can only make
me stronger"
We used to be close, especially when you
lived up the block
You can walk right past me but that don't
come as a shock
You always got so much to say, but I'm
just laughin' at 'cha
You really just don't know. But I ain't mad
at 'cha.

Graveyard Witch

Oh no and I will not forget tonight!
If you loved me you'd treat me well
Oh but what the hell, don’t you know pay backs are hell!
You will be sorry when I work my spell on you,
Yes you will be sorry for the rest of your cursed life!
'Cuz it's back to the Graveyard once again. Too late now to make amends.
Try as you may you cannot win! Oh the curse of the Gypsy witch will haunt you
'til the day you die. Some things cannot be forgiven and this is one of those
Things, I’ve taken all I'm gonna take from the old Lion and blue grey eyes.
You have no one else to blame but yourself, now the ends justify the means on
Great dark wings. And it's back to the Graveyard once again. Too late now to make amends.
Try; try as you may now you just can't win! You are no match
For the Graveyard Witch and yes it is back to the Graveyard once again!

What Drives Me Still

The light through
My Grandmother’s
Bedroom window
Called out to me

‘Calls out to me’

Leading me to places
Where I had to go
Revisiting me now
In my twilight years

‘In my twilight years’

Reminding me again
Of those places I’ve been
And my reasons for going
As the mileposts shone

‘And the mileposts shine’

Reaching into the distance
Where the horizon pulled
And the dawn arrived
In what drove me once

‘In what drives me still’

(Villanova Pennsylvania: January, 2014)

Obsessio

The past faded
  as ideas came alive

Destroying with every thought
 the status…
   —of the status quo

(Villanova Pennsylvania: January, 2017)

Two Thoughts- 10/9/2018

              Vindicta

The ends justify the means
   —when the means entail revenge

(Villanova Pennsylvania: January, 2014)

       Sum = Zero

Totality expanded
The sum is now zero
Risk and certitude
 —one and the same

(Villanova Pennsylvania: January, 2014)

Aphorisms- Idiomatic expressions

*Aphorisms/ Idiomatic expressions* (Short, pithy, instructive sayings passed down through the years) Composed: by Tom Wright 7/12/2018 The man who coined the aphorism “Seize the Day” Didn’t always mean “The Ends Justify the Means” but may. Many have said “Rules Were Made To Be Broken” Not only written rules but some which have been spoken; “The Medium is In the Message” that these rules bare, And “A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words” only if we share. “He Who Represents Himself Has a Fool for a Client” Old Abe had it right and he was considered a giant; “Doctors Make the Worst Patients” it’s been told, They tend to self diagnose as their opinions take hold. “Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket” if made of thatch, And “Don’t Count Your Chickens before They Hatch” Many believe “Where there’s A Will, There’s A Way” And therefore believe “Every Dog has Its Day” But truth is often hidden in what each man sees, Because often, “He Can’t See the Forest, for the Trees” It’s said “You Can’t Teach, an Old Dog New Tricks” Technology sometimes has hit me “Like a Ton of Bricks” But “All’s well that Ends Well” with things “Cut and Dried” These aphorisms have left me almost “Fit to Be Tied” “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” I’m found plenty, Finding always, that “Hind Sight is Twenty-Twenty” Some things come so easy it’s considered “A Piece of Cake” But remember, “There Are Two Sides to Every Pancake” “Immediately If Not Sooner” or “Fore You Can Say Jack Sprat” I’ll give you another idiom, “Curiosity Killed the Cat” “Don’t Put the Cart before the Horse” said with “Tongue in Cheek” And if “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs”, just watch, don’t speak; Sometimes our futility “Is Like Whipping a Dead Horse” Once it’s “Kicked the Bucket” it’s too late of course; These idioms are “A Drop in the Bucket” and “A Dime a Dozen” They’re almost as exciting as having a “Kissing Cousin” “Them that’s Got Shall get”, I’ve oft heard others say, And some attitudes expressed are “It’s My Way or the Highway” Before you ever “Spill the Beans” “Get to the Bottom of” why The truth will come out “Quicker Than a Cat Can Wink its Eye” Vince Lombardy was a coach from way back when, Coining the phrase “Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win” He never wasted his resources on a legal mouthpiece, He knew “The Wheel That Squeaks the Loudest, Gets the Grease”
