Just Let It Go

Is this life just a hidden message?
As I pound these streets, I wonder
As I crawl these walls, I ponder
You left on a cryptic message

Never to return, yet your still out there
Oh so many times, far too many crimes
Gone for good, just like the winter air
You might be missed, as people continue to stare

It’s all in your head now
Just let it go, just let it go

Watching three women pass by, life on the their backs
Where will they go?
All still young, frail and faces full of cracks
On they move, turn and all so low

Watching the people, crowds begin to sway
Analysing their thoughts, following a long day
What’s in store when they get home?
Lost in thought, onwards I roam

It’s all in your head now
Just let it go, just let it go
It was a long time ago
Now go with the flow

                                                                            © Shane Cogan, 2013

Superficial Smiles

Superficial Smiles by Shane Cogan

A trapped house can be worse than a prison
Cell doors open daily, a sealed house door never
Guards who snarl or smile is a guard forever
They also torture, but you found your own prism
Selected friends are such a treasure
Deselect those friends at your leisure

Superficial smiles, superficial cries
Superficial tastes, superficial wastes

Handshakes in the morning
Sour milkshakes for lunch
Diluted conversations for dinner
Repetitive dreams again for bedtime

Small talk discussions over a croissant
Alcohol dimensions under a florescent
Frantic racing is your new norm
A lost cause, caught up in a storm

Superficial smiles, superficial cries
Superficial lies, superficial allies

Silly allergies are your only sickness
You deem painkillers to be your only cure
Subscription pills for the old highs
Illegals for the new lows

What is right in one place
Deemed a disease or a disgrace
Solitude is your new pleasure
Despair is a lonely measure

Superficial smiles, superficial cries
Superficial spies with superficial eyes

Today's headline is tomorrow's forgotten story
Profits over people, with business in all its glory
Che Guevara t-shirts or Guerrilla warfare neritic?
Revolutionary heroes or a Sunday armchair critic?

Mass television pictures replacing dialogue
Mindless headline people news is our new fog
What would you do now for a taste of reality?
Do you miss and crave my sensuality?

A frank remark is better than a false smile
Our historical heroes are now sadly footnoted
No longer accepted, no longer quoted
Smiles mean nothing; a false handshake is our new style

Superficial smiles, superficial cries
Superficial skies with superficial eyes

Raven’s Shadow

                                   Staring beady eyed
                              Collecting for winters nest
                                   Natures unique post

                                    Silky shiny black
                               Dawn-to-dusk itinerant

Enter the Snowman

Exit gold crisp noise
Whole winter white blanket sky
Carrot pipe smoker

Stressed humans all cloaked
A full moon mirror shimmers
Oddly naked it stands

Cold dawn miasma
Snowball friendly warfare
Magnetic eye gaze

Market Scene

Market Scene

                                             multi coloured beans
                                      harvest tools scrap upon stone
                                             a place full of sacks

                                           bright colours leap out
thawed ice under moon lit feet
                                          chinking coins, chit chat

Journey's End

Journey's End by Shane Cogan (September 2013)

Silently we stood tall
The sun’s dawn chill on our backs
We gathered our last few belongings
The grey skies swirled over us
Onwards and upwards we walked
Little to do, we merely talked
Oh, the endless array of colours
Oh, the senseless decay of society

The autumn countryside air fed us
Fresh golden crisp sounds under our feet, our hooting horn
Azure skies shone now, the greyness vanished
Reaching up high, seeking solace…we moved on
Teaching us it was, freaking us out…we moved on
But there is no escape ever for a nomad
A wanderer: she pondered…and I squandered
Oh, there it was again
Oh, the planet we sought

I breathed in the warm dusk air
She breathed in the moonlit sky
Ravens swarmed over us, creating one dark cloud
Bats vibrated, as feeding time commenced
Harvest gatherers signalled night time
A lonely police siren echoed sleep time
Then we both felt its glaze upon our faces
It stole our smile
It sapped our energy
Oh, we could not move
Oh, yet only approve

Resting, we had no choice but too stargaze
We shifted our tired bodies
We emptied our final belongings
The crystal full moon had hypnotised us
The sun’s distant tale had teased us
The endless blanket of stars now warmed us

An epic sky tale of foe and friend had begun
We gazed. We starred. We dreamed
Nothing could have prepared us
Nothing had been written about its glory
Indigo colours encircled its core
Hazy lights acted as a sky highway
Interlinked, interconnected, intergalactic
First our planet, then their planet
We gave way, we gave in
Our journey at an end
A new one to begin
We had found our planet
Our people
Our nature
We smiled
We blinked
We spoke
We said: Welcome home

The Old Man In the Small Square

The Old Man in the Small Square

                                       city dirt as mask
                                    eternal season abode
                                    old temples his friends

                                       cloudy shelter sky
                                shuffles to collect dry leaves
                                     rusty hinge calls night

                                     passers-by eyes down
                                 loud crunching, act as pillow
                                     vulnerably wrapped

                                                                          © Shane Cogan, 2013

Predictable Porcupine

                                                  Porcupine strolls by
                                              spikes glowing only at dusk
                                                 always the same route

Dragonflies Breath

Dragonflies Breath, by Shane Cogan (Haiku style)

                                   warm and cold it flew
purple lake at dawn lay still
                                   wings too quick to see
