Best Bethany Poems
I had this best friend you see
she was always there for me.
She went away, there were sad goodbyes
then she came back with a strangers eyes.
Time had changed her when she ran away
I miss her so, and reminisce of yesterday.
When she was always by my side
but, all she wants is to go back and hide,
with all her knew friends and new places
to me these are all unfamiliar faces.
And bitterness coats my tongue
why couldn't we stay young?
I'm happy for the happiness you have
but I feel like I've been cut in halve,
you hardly talk to me these days
not time for me in all your knew ways.
You've inside jokes I no longer get,
I'm part of a past you want to forget?
You wanted to go far and get away from here
but, I miss you horribly so my dear.
I cry because we are no longer the same
and one day soon you will forget my name.

Lost in the divine languor of deaths sleep
Somewhere distant he heard the call of his name…
Barely sensing the avidity of life’s gift
Recalling the auger of the messiahs promise…
He rebuked the plea under the swathe of deaths eye,
Again the distant voice demanded of him
Forcing him to recall all that he had once been…
Beheld of the need to carry the word
Forcing himself to his feet inside the dark sepulcher…
Consciousness breached the boundaries of his mind,
With a heavy breath he carped at the pain
Racking through a body lost in the rigid shroud of death…
With each aching footfall he moved toward his salvation,
Again came the command, “Come forth”
The cherubic beauty of the voice persuading him…
Lazarus stepped into the light to live again.

May a star be-speckled sky
be the road that lights your way,
as a comet’s tail protects you
and surrounds you everyday
may the moons of ages past
cast a brilliance on your life
may motherearth hold the secrets
as your footsteps land on strife
I watched as you breached the void
between the veils I’ve yet to lift,
I first held your hand in friendship
and my heart was thrown adrift
So, in love with your first breath
that I had nothing left to fear,
see the one thing I always protect
is something I now hold dear
you’re the strength that god sent down
to help me on my way,
my little smiling devil
and to thank the heavens I do pray
now my child of grace and love
shadows the face of the world
she is the reason I’m leaving
my paper-heart and love unfurled
this prayer and spirit is binding
to hold you on your way,
I love you my darling daughter
and will, forever and a day
for my Gorgeous Daughter on her birthday 09.07.2010

Bethany swum for Ireland in London’s Paras,
Her teacher dad used to be a church minister,
She enjoys the Christian Fellowship Church,
And raises her hands to praise god after races.
She has an intellectual disability, memory loss,
And comes from Seaforde in County Down, NI.
After London 2012 when she swam for Ireland,
She switched to representing team Great Britain.
2013, and the Worlds, French Montreal, Canada,
And Bethany sealed three terrific silver medals:
One for the 100m breaststroke, one for the back,
And another for the 200m free, the S14 category.
But then quite unnervingly she fractured her wrist,
Which questioned her readiness for Rio’s games,
In 2015, when she was training hard everyday,
For the Brazilian Paralympics much anticipated.
But on the approach to Rio at Funchal, Portugal,
She won silver in the breast, silver in the medley,
Which saw Bethany with speed qualify for Rio,
Where she scored straight across all the boards.
At Rio gold for the back, gold for the freestyle,
And a gold for the 200m medley, then a silver,
For her favourite stroke, for the breaststroke,
In the 100m breaststroke: she’s a big success.

Blank verse
Dedicated to Bethany Philips, my baby niece.
Her little laughter warms my heart
As woolly mittens warm my hands
She’s captured my heart from the start
As a big bucket captures sand
So sweet is her innocent smile
Sweeter than pink cotton candy
My trials I forget for a while
When her charming, sweet smile I see
I thank God for sweet Bethany
My darling niece, so young and fair
She is such a blessing to me
She is my little teddy bear

I wish my dear aunt had lived long enough
To see the fine lady I have become
She took her life; life must have been tough
The pain was too great; her feelings were numb
I wish my dear aunt had lived long enough
To sing me songs and teach me how to pray
She took her life; life must have been rough
I wish I could see her come home each day
I wish my dear aunt had me in her mind
Before she took her life so tragically
Couldn’t she wait for life to be more kind?
Why didn’t she cling to God’s mercy?
I wish my dear aunt knew the pain I feel
I still peer through the glass door every day
Hoping to see her; the grief does not heal
I miss her loving smile in every way

Butterflies and flowers danced
to the happy humming of the breeze;
Even the bumblebee, busy as can be,
bounced around so beautifully
To the merry-making, swaying green
grass by the bubbling brook;
Here they seemed to savor the sweetness
of the serene and the simple;
All these are treasured now
in the childhood of my memory;
No longer do I see such butterflies,
flowers, brook and bee,
Yet the humming, dancing and bouncing
go on when you're with mom and me.
