" Bahama Nation"

A nation of peace,a nation of pride
A nation that's spread far and wide.
A nation of hope,a nation of joy,
Thats free for all, man, women ,girl and boy.

A nation to give,a nation to take
A nation filled with reggae, socca, calypso and rake and scrape.
A nation of colors; black,gold,aqua....sometimes called blue
can be seen everywhere above land and under sea too.

A nation of democracy and old english style, but things sure have changed if you
look up our file.
From outside rock stoves,to TV,radio, computers and wi-fi connectivity.........
I'd say that a long way from July 10 1973.

An nation filled with hospitality, love and history,
Arawaks,Caribs and American Indians are the basis of our nationality.
A nation where Tourism is number one, because of the Bounty of sand sea and sun.

Yes,a nation of Youth, sports ,culture, uniqueness and island fashion trends,
Like native Androsia our own local blend......and straw work and junkanoo, the list has no end.
This nation of beauty, splendor and self defense ;yes its celebarting its own INDEPENDENCE.

Premium Member Ogling Owglet

*This silly limerick was inspired by James Fraser. He often compares himself to an
eagle and I had an attachment to an owl that used to live in my backyard. He
challenged me to write a poem on a combination of the two: "Owglet." This one's
for you, James!

Ogling Owglet flew to the Bahamas

To catch a glimpse of Bahama Mamas

     So sexy they seemed

    But, boy, he turned green

They traded in his nest for Obama's

Queen For a Day

If I were queen for a day I would sit on my thrown
loving myself and all that I own
being pampered from head to toe
traveling worldwide whereever i want to go

If I were queen for a day I would live in a castle
living the life of glamour free from all hastle
relaxing on a secluded beach in the bahamas
and sippin endlessly on bahama mammas

If I were queen for a day I would dreess to the nine
everything I wear would have me looking so fine
smelling of perfume that's oh so sweet
living in the lap of luxury just can't be beat

All hail to the queen which is me
be it real life or fantasy
but wouldn't it be great to see
a dream turn into reality.

Dream Vacation

You've heard of a "Dream" vacation,
well that's what I'm gonna do.
My wife and I on a cruise ship,
which to us is nothing new.

This will be the ninth straight year
that we've gone on a seven day cruise.
Of all the vacation options I have,
it's the one I always choose.

The name of the ship is Carnival "Dream",
the largest in their fleet.
So it's my "Dream" vacation in more ways than one,
which I think is pretty neat.

The first stop will be in Nassau,
a Bahama paradise.
Next will be St. Thomas (V.I.)
I've already been there twice.

The next stop is St. Maarten.
It'll be my third time there.
Even though I've been before,
it's so lovely, I don't care.

At these three stops, I'll just relax,
don't really do that much.
I may go ashore and look around,
shop a bit and see the sights and such.

For the many attractions the ship offers,
I just can't say enough.
Excellent shows and things to do,
to top them would be tough.

This is my "Dream" vacation,
I always look forward too.
It's the most relaxed I ever get,
there's nothing I'd rather do.

Miss Bahamian Culture

Miss Bahamian Culture
a woman who pledges loyalty
to put Bahama land from the time
she was conceived out of the womb

Miss Bahamian Culture
a woman who sheds the blood
of gold, black and aquamarine
straight from her veins
as she wakes up each morning
to the pulsing beat of Goombay drums
and cowbell singing in her ears

Miss Bahamian Culture
a woman who is a true cultural icon
always clothed in either Androsia Print
a costume of cardboard and crepe paper
or gold, black and aquamarine attire
from head to toe

Miss Bahamian Culture
a woman who is a pure nationalist
who always remember where her navel string was buried
in her place of birth and tropical sanctuary
regardless of where she travels in the world
whether it be in Miami, Cuba, Japan or Vancouver

Thanksgiving In the Bahamas

Many years ago as we've been told
Pilgrims landed on America shores
Remembered for their gifts of love
Shared with natives living there
Surviving those long winter months
Who would have thought
Their kindness would cross the seas
To our small Bahama Land!
We celebrate Thanksgiving
With turkey and pumpkin pie to!
It is a time to give God thanks
For richly blessing our Bahama Land!
The adoption of this tradition
Inspires us to reach out to those in need
And draw closer to our divine purpose
To be sincerely thankful for all God has done!

The Bahama Islands, Our Tropical Paradise

The Bahama Islands, our tropical paradise
the apple in eyes of the Caribbean
the place of my birth
like the planet Saturn camouflaged
in sun, sand and sea!

The Bahama Islands, our tropical paradise
the archipelago we all love
from Grand Bahama,
Abaco, Exuma to Inagua
a sanctuary where summer vacations
and island hopping are endless!

There is an abundance of activity
for Bahamians and tourists can all enjoy
Junkanoo, Goombay Fest and Pineapple Fest
buying Androsia Print
and scuba diving in The Dean's Blue Hole!

The Bahama Islands, our tropical paradise
I'm very proud to be a loyal Bahamian
with your balmy coconut trees
and your tropical white sandy beaches
you are God's gift to the tourism industry!

God Did It

Decem in expectancy has come anon
This morn, dress in bridal mist
Of late night dews that fall on
Worn ferns, Bahama and Lilies amidst
A slim cool air in the atmosphere
Gently bids adieu to a fleeting year.

Alas, in a lull have all the waters
Make their confluence in crystal Heav’n;
Solace plants derive from dew showers
With stalks and buds and roots swoll’n.
Ha, a weaver in flight put up a nest
And makes to breed with a new guest!

Adieu, adieu, adieu ye lonely years
Adieu, make way for a conjugal bliss
To sapp drops of tears as with fears
When hearts in harmony conjoin with ease;
For HE who mould a woman out of man
Ordains them for warmth in storm and harmattan!

Stride the aisle then, daughter of Anwu
Thy beauty God’s house brightly lit
All things beautiful, and marvelous too
God makes them all, God did it!
Happy day, happy hearts, happy love
Happy as the wings of a soaring dove!

Happy still, the one who finds his rib
That one and one no longer two but one
And yet multiply by eros in filial crib
With new born babes; daughter and son.
Hence shall the fountain of health and grace
And the spring of joy flow all thy days!

(For Goddidit Esiro Igbape).

Premium Member The Atlantis Soup Convention

At the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas,
Souper poets are drinking Bahama Mamas.

Casino games are set aside every night
as Soupers take the stage to read poems they write.

Ladies dress up as mermaids and men as sailors,
not outfits that can be found at Lord and Taylor’s.

With many applause breaks and standing ovations,
attendees are inspired to share verse creations.

The thrill of conventions can’t be understated;
members have personal encounters long awaited.

Masks will fall from some who chose anonymity --
no avatars stifle their sociability.

A winged warrior and silent one are revealed
as all members’ true identities are unsealed.

No longer will there be conflict on the Soup site;
when we meet people, we’re obliged to treat them right.

With plans for another gathering underway,
adversaries’ best qualities are on display.

Vows to interact online as they do in person
are pledged by all Soupers without any coercion.

Conventions like this serve such a worthy purpose
and some long-lasting friendships are sure to surface.

Premium Member The Present On the Beach

The May Bahama breezes rustled fronds
of palm trees very common on the beach.
And he, with an affinity for blondes,
was drawn to one who seemed within his reach.
Encompassed by white sand and azure sea,
embraced by warming rays, she, sweet and thin,
a present for his eyes now seemed to be,
well-wrapped in golden tissue - smooth, young skin.
The challenge often facing him was gone -
no need to guess, by checking cleavage out,
the looks of what he fondly gazed upon.
Her luscious mangoes bared left him no doubt.
Engaged in sport, he thanked his lucky star
he’d packed binoculars to see so far!

Bermuda Triangle

Bermuda Triangle

This event was terrifyingly true,
Out in Atlantic, on the ocean blue.
It was ‘81, after we left Fort Lauderdale,
Hoping for happy Bahamas vacation tale
Aboard chartered sailboat, ketch of 52 feet,
Even air conditioned for the Florida heat.
Three couples, all best friends, comprised the crew,
Plus hired captain, since to big boats we were new.
We departed on the evening tide,
Little knowing the captain had lied.
Planned sailing the Gulf Stream throughout the night
To see Bahama reefs in morning light.

We dined and drank and steered in shifts,
Light wind, sea smells coming in whiffs.
Suddenly I was shaken awake,
“Come help!” they shouted, real fear, not fake.
I rushed on deck to see the scene:
Calm breeze, slow rolling beam to beam,
Captain drunk, in funk, throwing up his meal,
Crew pointing to compass, no one at wheel.
Captain staggers, slurs we must now turn back,
Crew plainly having a panic attack.
VHF just scary static in dark night,
Compass dial wildly spinning, such a fright!
Direction finder showed same signal all around,
Everyone worried about reefs, running aground.
Only Power not Sailboats, the captain had known,
He’d let us drift too far north, his cover was blown.
Now lost in Bermuda Triangle of fable,
Stars blocked by clouds, and no navigation table.
Crew whimpering aloud on the open ocean,
Just soft sloshing and a random rolling motion.

Despite Captain sniveling about being hired,
I took charge, yelling that he was now fired,
Then lashed the steering wheel tightly right
So that we’d ram no reefs, come what might.
Four hours later, shortly before sunrise,
Compass began working to my surprise.
Radio and RDF receiving like new,
We were no longer sole boaters on the sea blue.
Proceeded to West End, docked safely in slip
With no word from ex-captain, not even a pip.
Crew cheered our mystery adventure, what a great trip!

Hondo Died Yesterday

Hondo Died Yesterday

By Rick Rucker
“Hondo died yesterday,”
I heard the news, I said “No way!”

He seemed so big, and strong,
I was sure he would enjoy a life, very long,

Always there, with a joke,
Or a cigar to smoke,

In his eye, a devilish spark,
Or from his mouth, a wise remark,

With the ladies, an unrepentant flirt,
In a Tommy Bahama shirt,

Such was his fame,
We were all drawn to him, as moths to a flame!

When he was born, they broke the mold,
There couldn’t be two so bold,

It wouldn’t do to have more than one,
We couldn’t take so much fun!

I know I will miss him every day,
But most especially on a car show Sunday,

Someone else will man the mike,
No disrespect, but he will be like,

Comparing bodywork to Bondo,
No one else could be like Hondo!

Stay Local

Sitting in the local bar
Eating local fare
Country music playing on the jukebox
Feet start tapping
People talking.
The barmaid hopping getting liquor pouring.
Family
Not kin but family just the same.
Similar hardships faced
Different stories to share.
Locals all here for the same reason.
Good friends
Great food
Supporting a local place
Known as Bahama Mama's.
Some come on down on a Saturday night,
For great singers from the valley.
Singing from the heart
Doing their part
To keep a local business here.
Where it belongs
Where it needs to thrive
Where keeps the local fun alive.
