It was as recently as yesterday
that noble Benedick was heard to say
that he would never see his wedding day.
Beatrice as a lady also denied
that the day would come when she'd be a bride.
These two loved one another deep down inside.
Right up to the present, this they both denied
Claudio and Hero displayed for everyone to see
Benedick and Beatrice had written love poetry.
So finally, the truth had come out.
There was no longer any room for doubt.

Constables Dogberry and Verges have Don John's cohorts that are bad.
The two men in their custody are named Borrachio and Conrad.
They confessed their involvement in the plot to shame Hero.
Don John took advantage of the gullibility of Claudio.
The friar and company spread the rumor that Hero died.
In reality, until she clears her name, Hero will merely hide.
Meanwhile, the culpable Don John has taken flight.
The enraged Benedick has challenged young Claudio to a fight.
Don't worry readers; everything will turn out right.
A happy ending to this play will soon be in sight.

Beatrice listens to Ursula and cousin Hero.
Those two speak loud enough so Beatrice will know.
She cannot believe what those two women say.
Benedick is madly in love with her today?
Three men have duped Benedick in a similar way.
When Beatrice tells Benedick to come to dinner right now,
both of them want to get together somehow.
As surely as the sun always follows the moon,
this couple will be united very soon.

Talking together are Claudio, Don Pedro, and Leonato.
Benedick is standing nearby viewing this trio.
The three are aware that Benedick is lurking near,
so they speak loud enough so he can hear.
Benedick and Beatrice readily exchange caustic wit.
He loves Beatrice, but that's something he won't admit.
Beatrice has feelings for Benedick that are much the same.
She won't admit either for fear it might bring her shame.
Well, Benedick is hearing things he cannot believe today.
Beatrice loves Benedick is what the conversing men say.
The words the men have spoken sound very, very, nice.
They have managed to shatter any encumbering ice.

ACT 1, SCENE 1
Opening night of a new West End Production called
‘Shakespeare: Ode to a Character’
Curtain rises
Enter BENEDICK (in full costume as Ophelia from Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’)
BENEDICK:
‘An Ode to Ophelia’
I have a heart,
Which is bound in its own chains,
Arteries crystallised in bleak light.
I want to love,
I want to be loved in return –
More than anything, I feel.
Walking alone,
The ache of an empty life can crash in,
Breaking your tongue,
Cracking like frozen words.
All I want,
Is to hear once the songs you sing,
To think you could love me,
Or even know who I am.
I would wrap my hands
In feathered garlands,
Flowered rings
That may decay with my dying heart.
But, oh god,
I know,
How you drowned in your elemental beauty,
How you collapsed beneath the patriarch.
In your sunken deathbed,
Hair betrothed without such wedded bliss,
Voice silenced in unspoken vows,
You shone like an icon and deity.
Goddess, Diana,
One soliloquy, one heartbreak, one funeral.
Lunar.
But how dare I,
Ophelia,
Ever compare myself to you.
