thank you thank you to my mentor
she seen in me in me no one could see
write your poetry but use virgule
and diligent I write tons of nonsense
with no virgules as I am a bad student
but you forever in my heart never to be forgotten my mentor.

once upon a time
one knew how to begin
the state of the day dream,
by removing the mind,
shedding the every day
paraphernalia, then escaping
into a realm just
above the physical

wishes were formed
refined into possibilities.
great words were put together
fashioning unforgettable thoughts
ideas. solve the world,
feed the hungry, succour the afflicted
find lasting love
with someone who understands.

that was once upon time
when youth invaded every corner
of life with depth of
time. now it has shrunk
crept away unnoticed into
the place of things forgotten.
reverie of age has become,
into this wandering mind-time

now the escape does
not require active initiation.
it flows without boundaries
between here, now, and then.
the shape has changed from
slightly tenuous but graspable
to muzzy melted cotton candy
clouds sweet but impossible

to construct. depth is lost
with the passage of time
the betrayer of all day dreams.
presently lay down,
surrounded by personnel myths
slowly, gently transmogrify
into whom you have always been.

words cannot express how I feel right now....
I just want to thank you for all you have done for me....
I do not know where I would be today....
if you where not there as my crutch when I needed you most....
you are the most understanding & caring person in the world....
to have and to love as a mother....
I thank my prayers from the good Lord up above....
for the prayers that were answered for the man I have become today....
I wish all parents were as supportive as you have been to me....
to talk when we need too stay quiet when we need too....
thank you for the life you have given me....
and the direction that you have led me in....
I will cherish all the memories, advice, & love you have given me....
   forever and always....
   Thank you
   I love you Mom.
   I love you.

Here we stand as a pride
Looking into each other’s eyes
As all the years go roaring by
We finally get to see where
We are

Coming from the bottom with our
Roar seeming small
But now here we are; standing tall

As we grow up big and strong
We have figured out
Who we are
No longer going with the pack
But being your own leader
With a nice pat on your back

The beating of your heart
The smile on your face
Here we are lions and here we shall stay.

At first we were lost
But we have found our way
Here we are though
Spending our final

Graduation day is
the light at the end
of the tunnel,
A parental dream
that has finally
born fruit,
All their hopes and
desires come true,
A victory , proud
and absolute,

It is a joyful
event, after much
Tears and sweat,
nights spent in
An accomplishment of
a glorious endeavor,
A smile accompanied
by a deep sigh,
the journey
remembered forever,

With a gown and
graduate cap,
they show themselves
a new to the world,
That one can dream
and dare to be

A temptation unlike myself unfurls
(Everyone’s here asking if I was in the hospital)
The shadow of movement has passed on,
And a cold electric scatters away from a scorched tree.

Our mutual acquaintance says hello to me again,
He was at the rehearsal and said you wanted us all to be closer
Why hasn’t your mother shown up yet?

I’m leaving this place hating you,
And I hear that you think we’re best friends

The sun strays out from beyond a great building jutted into an afternoon breeze.

So here it is, the ending 12 years
a 14 year sonnet subtracted by two
12 years of memories, of loves, of loss
12 years of friendships, of laughs, of sobs
here it is, the ending
I can't say I'm impressed nor depressed
see the way I have expressed
my departure from this crazy facility
I'm too overjoyed, jumping off my feet
doing cartwheels in my sleep
when slumber finally rolls in
yelling, screaming how I am finally free
to do as I please
with a gigantic smile upon my face
cause I know I won't miss this God forsaken place
though darkening like the sky
when the rain clouds clumsily clump around the sun
is the image of Scarlett Jade
sitting her usual corner without a smile
a smile faded into my faded jeans pocket
It's not about me, it's a lie fit to deceive
I love her
don't care who knows, don't care who tries to convict me for it
I love her
and in all ecstatic glory
I feel my own eyes start to swell, I'm alone
the red shown is the only inaudible confession
of her passing through my mind once more
The felt moment of her embrace, of her touch
told me mutely of the words she couldn't speak
even though she proposed she spoke them all
although I'm aware there's more to be shared
on both sides
but with sore shoulders I must raise my head
and be the first to speak
...just not today
I'm not ready today
for fear I may become stormy eyed
and stay, refuse to remove myself from her arms
I'd rather bask in the sun
and celebrate the last Friday
of a 12 year fiasco
of a 12 year endeavor
of a 12 year mayday parade
of a 12 year adventure
12 years,12 years; I guess I grew up here...

Six years
Punctuated with a walk across a stage
A piece of paper
Representing a past and future
listen to the cheers and whistles
This is your moment
It is ours as well
For you are the realization of our dreams
Our hearts are filled with love
See the fruition of our pride
Languish in our hugs and smiles
We know it has not been an easy path
You have chosen well
You have persevered
Celebrate this victory of the mind
Look too the illumination of your future
For now the possibilities begin
Your path continues forward
The mountain rises
Strengthened legs will aid your ascent
View the magnificence before you
Stop along the way
Rest when it is needed
Drink from the moutain streams
Smell the flowers for they are your reward
Sit and enjoy the view
Be thankful
Appreciate where you came from
Know that you are never alone
We will have picnics with you along the way
Be nourished by our love
Eat of our words
Be bolstered by our song
For life
Although not always easy
It is to be celebrated
So we celebrate
Yesterday that brought you here
Today when you walk across a stage
And tommorow
Each and every tommorow
For we know
We have always known
You are a gift from God!

Congratulations Matthew, we are beyond proud of you.

For those who don't know, Matthew means Gift from God.

The gym was dim.

Red and white balloons
glittered in the dusk
while flashing lights writhed
on the dark floor
like enchanted water-snakes
gliding through scented fog.

This was a celebration dance!

Eighth grade done at last,
they stepped, hesitant, into the roiling
teen-age sea,their synchronous, bobbing heads
attuned to the be-bop rhythms of the city (not their city),
and the lusty calls of the hood (not their hood).

Smooth gym walls echoed the dj's mechanical angst
endless, relentless beats, the racing heart of the machine,
artificial sighs, nano-seconds long and gigabytes wide.

The boys, spinning on heads and leaping from hands and
flailing legs, showed an athleticism
never seen in PE,
while the girls huddled in their own dark corner
and planned their move;

their fashion walk,
legs strutting ahead
of swaying hips,
heels clicking the hard, dark floor,
as they stalked right up to the foul line

where boys were spinning and leaping
through throbbing lights
to the tribal, primal beat.

So the girls turned,
hips flung in defiance,
and sashayed back to the wall,
staring hard at the gaping boys
over their swaying shoulders.

Everyone thinks they know that girl. At
least they think they do.
You know that girl that makes everyone
laugh, and is a class clown. Who used
to be a star athlete. And had everything
going for her.
Yeah that girl that everyone thinks they
She became homeless at the age of 16
due to a house fire.
Yeah that girl everyone thinks they
Yet that girl is still laughing away and
making everyone laugh, but isn't the
same inside, No, Something inside of
her changed they way she felt.
Yeah that girl everyone thinks they
She became mentally ill, she was
diagnosed with major depression and
bipolar disorder. She was always under
medication, so you never knew what
side of her you where going to get.
Yeah that girl everyone thinks they
No one knew how much she hated
hearing sirens go off, or how she
couldn't stand seeing fire trucks. She
struggled living her life daily.
Yeah that girl everyone thinks they
She lost her closes friends cause she
shut them out and nearly lost them all.
Yeah that girl everyone thinks they
From what I hear it's been 3 years
since the fire and that girl is barely
getting her sight of her future back.
Yeah that girl everyone thinks they
She is talking to her lost friends again,
but just isn't the same for her, so she
has to make new ones. Which means
she has no one.
Yeah that girl everyone thinks they
She is happier now and is looking
forward to graduating and moving on
from this chapter of her life and letting
How do I know so much of her?, well
"that girl" is me.Yeah that girl that
everyone thought they knew.
But im fine now. Sure I have my
downfalls, but I still get up and smile.

In a sea of royal blue she floated
 Silver studded jewels glittered
Like falling fireworks they embodied
The long flowing lines of her gown.
This little girl-- now woman
Shone with angelic pride
On her side a male friend
Both beaming from the inside.
School was finally done
Friends made would soon be gone
New life and adventures to find
As you leave high school life behind.
We seen you grow though out the years
So now we give a hug and hearty cheer
Congratulations to our Amber dear
Your high school years are done.

High school's children of the year almost grown,
We are scattering seeds destined for the world.
Skipping at different shakes in the breeze,
Some of us will be caught in evergreens,
Held to never see beyond, devoured
By squirrels and birds.
Being chewed up and then spat out in feces,
All is not lost.
Several sprouts will spring from the ground up;
Others will escape and find their way again
In the wind.
Destiny does not just ride on the air:
Though it forces us into many follies,
Each of us pulls our own weight.
Locations undesirable must be crossed,
For how can we, as little seeds,
Expect to travel if we trap ourselves?
Though it is important we bloom,
The hills far away are patiently waiting
For our presence.

Graduation day, Graduation day
today that is all I hear
but I will not be graduating,
and its this I fear
I'm a simple failure
and this is simply clear
at least in my own eyes
because I know I cannot steer...

...My life in the way I thought that I could
everything in the bag, turns quickly to, knock on wood
and now I'm left observing, the would, the could, the should
thought that I was moving forward, so very still I stood
Graduation day, Graduation day
congrats to all of course
I hate to be crude but
stop beating that poor horse
It's already died
from being beaten with such force
and as you beat the lifeless words
your eyes show no remorse...
...For the sad failures like me
a graduation I will never see
knowing its my own fault still I make a plea
"Graduation day, Graduation day
Please don't forget me."

The Band Concert

It was not a typical musical concert on an indoor stage,
but a marching band concert—and a very special one to me.
I sat with family on bleachers that sunny day as
the glorious band’s thunderous sounds filled my ears,
and my chest vibrated wildly with the powerful music
from brass, woodwinds, percussion and resounding drums.

As my heart beat in sync with the strong pounding rhythm,
such deep patriotic emotion fully engulfed me, and I
could feel my heart fill up with pride as it beat with
the thrill of that music and with the vision of those great
young men and women in huge formations, marching
on their way to receive diplomas and off to serve our country.

Then I saw him, our dear son, marching within that "Long Gray Line",
stepping in unison with fellow classmates to that awesome music.
The wondrous relentless rhythm from those drums and horns,
together with the artistic and intricate merging formations,
engulfed my whole being as tears filled my eyes with pride and joy—
on that special day—at that one-time special event—in May 1981.

It’s been a long ride but now
It’s time to say goodbye

I’ll miss you friend but
It’s time to say goodbye

Forgive me now for the things I've done
It’s time to say goodbye

Forget the bad remember the good
It’s time to say goodbye

Don’t shed a tear don’t cry for me
It’s time to say good bye

Remember I'm here when you need me later
It’s time to say goodbye

We’ve been through a lot but we did its together
It’s time to say goodbye

I’ll miss you forever
It’s time to say goodbye

Hey Mr. Editor,
It's not very often we hear true stories of enduring Love that grows with time. I can
hear the cynic groan as I write this, but it's a good human interest story and I
thought a good one for the coming of spring, a time of new birth and new beginings.
There is a couple who met while in school, years ago. After graduation they both
were seperated by thousands of miles; both got married to different people
sometime later and raised their young families. All this time their love remained
silent, waiting, yet strong. Today, their children are adults and about to venture on
their own lives. Reconnected once more, perhaps by fate, they have planned to wed
very soon. I was asked by the Bride-to-be, a dear friend, to write a poem on her
behalf which she would read to her Groom at their Wedding Ceremony. I was truly
honored and graciously obliged. It's titled,"My Beloved. Thank you for your
consideration of my request.

My Beloved, Today, I can not say that dreams do not sprout wings! Nor will I ever accuse time of being an adversary Not when I know that within its grasp lies our past, present and future Today, my heart is full and overflowing with abundant joy! Gazing into your beautiful soul, I glimpse love’s sparkling reflection Streaming like a river, endless, into vast ocean tides And I stand in awe of God’s everlasting love and providence The sweetest portion of which we have come to taste! For so long I have waited! How I have yearned for this moment When I would pledge life and love to you; become one flesh, one heart! One heart that will bleed no more as nothing can stand between us I will lose myself in you and you in me forever! No longer will dreams haunt our lonely nights And I will not have to walk this side of Heaven without you When I consider the paths which we have traveled I marvel and smile, as now it is clear - they were leading us to, this day! In the silence of a thousand nights my prayers to heaven took flight And though seasons of yesterdays came only to fade away Time, it seemed, had shelved my fervent plea ‘Til sweet destiny obliged, leading me to the one who holds my heart My Beloved, my husband, my best friend, and companion, Our love has arrived; our single journey begins today!

We will on that long awaited Saturday of October
at a ceremony graced by men of great stature
be officially declared victors in academics

We will take a well-rehearsed parade
towards the podium where we will shake hands
with professors to be crowned
with titles no one can ever take away from us

Oh brother, oh sister, oh fellow graduates
do you recall those times
when we were often trapped in helter-skelter situations
scurrying on pavements with heavy bundles of books;
heavy with unsolved problems?

We fell sometimes, yes we fell
but dared to rise to regroup our focus
and now we shall wear those gowns,
we shall wear those clothes tagged success
and shoes free of dust, proud of ourselves

We eyed for this thing
we eyed for it with determination
and here we are now; we have it on our hands
and no one can ever take it away from us

Your Family has raised you
Your Creativity has led you.
Your Determination has held you
Your Work has lifted you
Your Friends have been with you
Your school will remember you

You have made memories and friendships to always hold
You have made your life and it has made you
You have become more and you will become more again.
You have been part of the past and you are now a part of the future
You have been one of many but you are still unique
You have depended on others and others will come to depend on you

Never forget you can still seek advice or extend a helping hand
Never forget that you can make things better but cannot change everything
Never forget that paths will change and may again cross
Never forget to use your strengths and never give up
Never forget mistakes happen and never forget to forgive
Never lose your courage or fail to get back up again
Never forget to continue to strive, hope, pray, and be happy

Remember there are still lessons to be learned and mountains to be climbed
Remember there are still fears to overcome and dreams to be dreamed.
Remember we Salute your future endeavors and… We Salute You.
Remember you are uniquely you
Remember: You are our sons and daughters… And
Remember: You are loved true.

I am that I am

I am the way to your long forgotten dreams
I have been visited by so many people before you
And shall continue to get visitors after you
I am no home to you so think me not as one

I am a tree blessed with sweet fruits and a good shade
My shade is just below me for you rest without any wrestle
But my fruits are far away in my branches which you can not get without any hassle
Those who come for my fruits will surely go home with a sample
Such are the people with believe and struggle

I have lead thousands of people to their way
And many has gone astray
Willy-nilly, you sailed your boat to the Isle of the blessed
And such a place is no home to the willy
Dilly-dally, you shall walk through the valley of darkness

"Against the darkness I raised such a bright light"
"And first made clear the use of your life"
"Glory of my existence follow me"
"And set your footsteps now on my sure way"
Not as a contender but as a learner

I am your mother and finder of things as they are
And present them to you as a fatherly teachings
I have no father
But I do have a mother
Who gave birth to ten of us with no brother

I am a place where you can't come for a picnic
But those who stay outside think of me as a nut milk

Who am I?

I am Tamale Polytechnic
A place where you will acquire not only the skill but with the technique
I am an academic institution
With a rich constitution
To govern my people in the right direction

Graduation, we have come a long way to get to this day.
From the best friends since kindergarten,
To the drivers’ licenses of high school,
We all have grown.
Elementary was where we met our closest friends,
Middle School was where we branched out and tried new things,
High School was where we began the journey to find who we are.
Though our journey has only just begun,
Our lives have still been forming through the friendships made,
And the friendships lost.
Now that we are all closer to finding our selves,
Our paths may take different turns.
But always remember
No matter where we all are,
We are all still connected by our roots.

On this your graduation day, let it be said that pride is

just one of many things felt

This day is set aside to acknowledge all the many

Accomplshments you have achieved

As you walk across the stage, look back and smile.

Look ahead, knowing that whatever path you take,

You are never alone.

For you take a piece of those left behind with you.

So smile, laugh, and cry knowing where ever you go

And whatever you do, we are always with you

One day
I got the text
Said you wanted to be more than friends
Sent at around 10:30 p.m
My heart soared and I knew
I wanted you right then
One month passed
It went by so fast
As your graduation yearns forward
I treasure my time with you
Every kiss counts
Every word lasts forever
Lingering in your ears
Every touch is more than what it seems.
Today is your last day here at school with me
June 1st, 2012
The letter and gifts and the love keeps us together
As we talk I remember every word you say
This is not goodbye
Because we are meant to last forever

For my amazing boyfriend who I love very much <3

i give her a hug as she shows me her degree
i reward her with encouragement and a chocolate shake
so many of those close to us tried with everything in them to bring her down
yet she kept her eyes locked on the goal and the work it included
i then present her with a ticket for a caribbean cruise for seven days and seven nights
her tears showed me all the gratitude i needed to see
no words were necessary
now if i had the power, i would tackle the devil hard and put a bullet through his head
then again, that is not the kind of man i was made to be in God's eyes
in her own quiet way, she allows her success to be her publicist
caring for those who care for her, she presents myself and others with a special gift of her own
it is a token with the word APPRECIATION in all caps engraved on it
we all say she did not have to
she expresses the contrary
here stare lets silences us gracefully in understanding
the vibe now festive, we celebrate a deserved individual who made it....
