cherry blossoms
swirl through the streets:
a ghostly veil
to help replace the men
who have left for war

Yamazakura: a type of wild Japanese cherry tree (the word can also be used
to describe the tree's blossoms.

During WWII, the first Japanese Kamikaze unit was given the title
of Yamazakura, to honour the last two official Samurai warriors
who were part of the unit.
The Samurai Bushido code dictates death before the shame of surrender.

Falling cherry blossoms were believed to bring good luck to the courtships
of the teenagers who were left behind (in hope of many male babies),
because the Emperor had conscripted all available men into the doomed war.

recess is over

as the school bell rings
children are shrieking with glee

    recess is over.

          a sudden rain of bombs leaves
          the playground deathly silent

A Salute To The Fallen

Brass handles, polished,
Purple  satin,  heavenly,
Perfect   wedding   suit,
National   flag   neatly  draped.
I  salute  thee,  soldier   mine!

of the war - not one will care
soon - that it was done
not one will mind - neither bird

Our National Strength

The brave and the free,
Lain to rest for liberty.
Honor forgotten.
Souls sacrificed, protecting.
Sovereignty wrought with valor.

Tanka by night

Tanka by night
Deceptive words by day
This the Russian leader’s way
Putin is short... sighted too
As he stumbles over Ukraine
History repeats

Nato retreats
In a huddle of words
Tanka you for nothing says Ukraine
As a hail of Russian shells fall like rain
Europe must beware of Russian floods

Footnotes from Japan:

A samurai warrior raises his sword
Slicing though many ancient verse and texts
He smiles at me, as I stare back in absolute abject terror
Am I I next?
He is beaming at me in raucous laughter
As he says No Tanka, Tanka to you
I raise my saki and replied Tanka to you too!!!!

in the village street
alone our brand new gas lamp
this our Las Vegas,
while we all celebrated
enemy bombs raining down.

---land of the mighty

land of the mighty
brought to their knees in surprise
warriors far from home
remember ancient war cries
and the pierced autumn sky

* Tanka is a long form which arose from the same literary tree as haiku
[no title, punctuation, or capitalization were used] as such,
it should have 31 onji sounds [which are much smaller than syllables]
so, less tha 31 syllables is preferrable.

It is a MOOD poem in which [unlike haiku] metaphor, personification,simile and
other poetic devises maybe used in a short/long/short/long/long format.

Tears of the War

Tears of the war

Tears flow silently,
Pride digs deep into the heart,
Dare you defy grief,
Bravery etched in the gold,
Mortals are now immortal !

Even The Angels Wept

instead of flowers stones bloom in mass profusion engraved with honor….. history has come to rest locked in the shadows of time _ echoed from the past the foreboding sound of guns thunders from the sky... lamented tears of angels scatter over sacred ground _ far from battlefields, all creatures mourn the endless silent sacrifice... grief still mingles in the breeze with the sounds of a bugle

Tanka two

It is cold outside
Yet almond trees bear flowers
Sun and rapid rain
Winter and spring dance tango
A green leaved oak applauds

A charming princeling
Fight battles in a lost war
Pleased by his dimness
The tabloids are triumphant
He has made war glamorous

Silent Marked Warrior

Ironical pain
By paths filled with crimson tears;
May it be finished?
Alive with all hope heartfelt,
Within now confused visions...

Lost, broken belief;
Remorseful mists messaging;
Aching unbelieved,
Scarred warrior wanders through ways;
On stained decisions to waste?

Battles could soon end;
Finish my calm aggressions,
My restrained instincts.
A bitter blur messages
My instincts beneath lost thoughts...

In my broken heart,
Ironic wishes revealed
Muted wars inside;
Hidden voices within me;
Suppressed shouts, silent screams found...

In dead, silent pain,
My serene light and darkness
Quietly call me;
Beasts, demons, dreams, angels, sins;
Fighting for heart, mind and soul...
