beyond the glass

her tail twitches

her throat constricts with strange sounds

just beyond the glass

the wild birds in flight taunt her
the caged bird looks on amused

*Honey, the cat, sits at the window making strange, threatening
noises at the birds outside. ignoring the love bird in a cage less than a foot to her left

light is red now green I scream
                              dashing in and out
a clean sweep he lifts and bounce

Pampered Feline

black feline turns her pouty nose baked salmon does not meet her pleasure forgets she found solace from nature’s wrath rambling through woods seeking food challenged by predators curls up on my lap safe from elements outside purrs without a care oblivious to her past protected from life outdoors no wind ruffles fur -- assured she'll never hunger for love or for food

The Finches

They're singing. They are.
The finches. They sing beauty.
That tree is their house.
How charming! Birds, music, tree.
And the sun, friendly, like them.

Tanka to my three girls, Molly, Gracie and Zoe

                                  Tis with woeful eyes,

As I watch you leave again,

                                   When will you return?

Or is this our last goodbye

I’ll wait on the porch till night

Splashing Dog

(This is a Tanka: Japanese poem of five lines, the first and third composed of five
syllables and the others seven. In Japanese, tanka is often written in one straight line,
but in English and other languages, we usually divide the lines into the five syllabic
units: 5-7-5-7-7.)

Splashing Dog
    by Amy Swanson

Great drops of water
     fly vigorously from him!
Black hair glistening
     he gallops through the river,
     stops only to shake himself!

view point

persuaded by time,
clothed in rust, a sky reveals
    the hem of summer…
round green hills are strewn with oaks
as far as the eye can see….

kissing toes of a
 barn-red house, acres of grass
  stand at attention…
   John Deere rides the afternoon
    humming with satisfaction

under a pear’s shade
 golden hound naps lazily …
  one eye slides open…
   for an occasional glance....
on guard for squirrels who thieve

A Battle Rages

A battle rages
between beans and broccoli.
Sadly, no winner
emerges from this dark fog.
Perhaps I will blame the dog.

Shiloh ...

Her leash and frisbee
Sit high on a shelf, waiting
But no one is coming...
The park down on the corner
Looks abandoned and lonely

    Yet, there is a place
    Where the sweetest golden girl
    (Shiloh was her name)
    Tail wagging,...... happily plays
    Unleashed....while chasing rainbows!
