(When our oldest daughter was
in high school, she did not have a
date to the prom or military ball
so I did not make plans to get a
dress..She came in the day before
the event after school and said that
she had a date..That gave me twenty
four hours to come up with a dress..
I had only $20 left until next paycheck
and no credit card..I went to the
fabric store and got fabric and pattern.

The dress had 12 gores and it was floor
length..I stayed up until 2 am sewing up
a dress for her to wear the next eve..)

I hear
Each night she cries
Tears like crystalline rain;
They pierce my heart like frozen knives,
Sink deep

To my daughters

Her eyes
Searching the stars
To share her song, her heart
A clearing in the woods, hazel
Sofia.
Her eyes
Like azure skies
Reflecting in water
Absorbing all that life offers
Johanna.
Her eyes
That cannot lie
The goodness that lies
Within clouds to water God's fields
Stacey.

Daughter of Fall's twilight walks on moistened garden, awakening sweet quietude from earth. Such lure calms fresh meadows as tinted boughs flutter with evening's washed golden pallet, her gift. Contest No 360 of Brian Strand

Mommas sorry I took you from
The only life that you knew of

Mommas sorry I took you away
From your world of friends of every day

Mommas sorry you had to adjust
To brand new teacher’s and studious musts

Mommas sorry you haven’t fit in
To a school of strangers and what had been

Mommas sorry I had no other choice
Than to sooth your fears using my voice

Mommas sorry if you feel all alone
But I’ll guide you through this fearful unknown

Mommas sorry you’ve tried so very hard
Still nothing has changed, all but new scars

Mommas sorry for the sudden change
Adapt my daughters to all that’s strange

Give me time to help you feel at ease
Give me the moment to help you please

I’m not sure if you’re real
You could just be a ghost
I speak of you
I miss you too
Yet your presence lacks a host

We call, we text, but not enough
I fear its my fault but alack
The breaking of my heart
was when you did part
Without ever looking back

You held my hand but couldn’t see
The dragging scars you made
I want for your eyes
and never realize
There’s a debt you can never repay.

You can’t fix what you’ve broken
You tore me in half
Your shallow heart
twisted mine apart
Yet I fear to these words you’ll just laugh
