Listen to poem:

You Were Never My Friend

You were never my friend.
My heart would never, ever allow such a small thing.
Soulmate?, maybe...though so much more in the end..
I will give you my heart, only if you promise never to break it.
If the promise is never to be kept, I'll forgive you...
again and again.
For that is what this thing love is, all it ever does, or was.

When you look in the mirror do you see someone worth loving?
Don't you know it lies? Won't you listen to me tell you the truth?
It's about time you knew.

It was always you that was the smart one, you know.
Can you be smart enough to shut up and let me in?
The old hurts will go away. Or maybe they won't, doesn't matter.
I will love the broken you, with all your wonderful hurt, just as much.

Guess what?, you aren't perfect. And you can tell I ain't no carnival prize..
But there's something real, worth holding on to,
I could always see it in your beautiful eyes...

Hah, you do that too? I've read your poem Cinder Girl a dozen times or more. The one I'm really starting to connect to is the poem that shares your birth month. Eight pages of comments and none of them are mine. I'm ashamed now. Must fix this by September. -Richard

Paul, Thank you for stopping by and for the comment. Can friendship ever exist where the heart is bound? And where would you find enough years. Yet there are some that do just that. -Richard

Panagiota, Thank you for all the comments. The music is new to me too. It's by the gifted composer Fujisawa Mamoru, known professionally as Joe Hisaishi. -Richard

I wonder whom the protagonist addresses to. To woman, to himself or, perhaps, to God? As far as I see, even the author does not know this. I like the metaphysical uncertainty of this kind)

Can a man and a woman just be friends - I'm not sure, personally I don't think so, but many think I'm wrong - especially if the person is very special and ' there is something real, worth holding on to, I could always see it in your beautiful eyes.... Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.
