You were always on my mind

Why am I so lonely,
Why didn't I share love and time?
Why couldn't I make death wait longer?
You were always on my mind.

I would have shaped myself better,
Controlled my stubbornness and drive,
Listened to you, ignored conflicts,
You were always on my mind.

I would have reset my life's course,
Repenting past mistakes,
Heard your whispers of love so clear,
You were always on my mind.

Through days swiftly passing,
You were always on my mind,
In silent nights, your face appears,
A phantom of regret.

With tenderness, I'd hold you close,
Cherish each fleeting breath,
For every beat my heart has missed,
You were always on my mind.

Thank you for this example of what you expect in your contest. When I was younger I might have written a poem like this after relationships ended with guys that I dated but did not marry. If I was to write something like that now days I'd change were into ARE and mean it about my loving husband. I am considering your contest.

This is sad and romantic. It's too bad when disagreements pull people apart. Your poem is a poignant story of loss.

Very nice, Jay. Did you ever hear the country called You Were Always on My Mind? Your poem is lovely like Willie nelson's poem of the same title.

Hello Jay, I felt your heartfelt verses as they ache with longing and regret. The haunting refrain, "You were always on my mind," is like a solemn mantra. I love how through exquisite metaphor and imagery, you capture the timeless yearning to cherish loved ones while we can. Jay, this melancholic yet beautiful piece tugs at the heartstrings with its emotional honesty. Powerful work. - Blessings, Daniel
