Notes About The Poem

Hugo Chávez positioned the Venezuelan revolution in 1999 as a response to perceived U.S. economic imperialism. He advocated for sovereignty over the economy and a more equitable distribution of oil revenues to support social programs. Large numbers of poor people who never saw the oil wealth democratically elected Chavez. While his and Maduro's inept and corrupt socialism didn't work as promised, we also know that going back to the prior system will not address the systemic inequity. Sane people know good governance does not happen easily, intimidation won't create it, and our president's greedy and misguided intentions won't succeed.

you belong to me

Venezuela’s vast oil supplies
Sit square in our president’s eyes
For their petrol drums
Trump gives away crumbs
And loves that land as his franchise

Thanks Paghunda, there's a lot of money involved in all of this...and that money drives all kinds of strange actions. We should be looking for ways to get ourselves free from fossil fuels and reliance on oil extraction to the extent possible as a transition to a green future. Many don't realize, but our survival as a species depends on taking care of our planet. Smiles!!

Anaya, we're seeing the ravings of a few very strange men and their supporters who have no concept of where they (and we by default) are headed. They have a lust for wealth and no idea about the dangers associated with their musings. I find it too bad since my heart says life could be a blessing for just about all of us. However, that is not their concern. They so love wealth that they will sabotage anything and anyone who has an idea how to make a fair society.

Art, I always liked that song. I was just thinking that our current U.S. president has a different interpretation of what love means. He's one sick dude!

Thanks Arthur. I think that socialist movements have been doomed by our desire to have them fail and our sanctions and other actions taken against them. There's a lot of fear on the part of the very rich that they might be taxed fairly...an idea they can't stand. I'm not on one side or the other per se, but there certainly have to be reasonable limits on what one person can own. It could be done in a way that doesn't take away motivation to do good things.
