Year of the Street Urchin

Another year of
Homelessness,
Joblessness,
And abject poverty.
Year after year
He wanders about the slums
Shoeless,
Trudging through mud
With bruised feet
Life's uncomfortable;
A bed of roses
Full of thorns
Pricking his weather-beaten skin
When he lies down to sleep at dusk.
Each daybreak, a blessing
To be alive,
Each day, a struggle
To exist, to survive
Out on the mean streets
Panhandling,
Dumpster-diving,
Shelter-hopping
Perennially down-on-his-luck;
Why is life so unkind
To this poor soul?

The plight of such hapless souls tug at our heart ! Why is life so unkind to some.... we keep asking ! Some how he hasn't so far given up. He is determined to face life with stoic courage. A heart touching portrait you have drawn Edward !

Something we all see on the street--you chose an apt cause to write about during this holiday season. Is there ever a solution to this in our rich nation? Life is indeed unkind to them.
