Words and Meaning

Oh you words,

Visual and audible representatives of reality,

Children of conception that were nurtured by

Perception and feelings, under the auspices of

Reason which loaded you with meaning for

The sole purpose of communication for the

Exchange of ideas,

Why

Don't you retain your denotations after leaving

The lips that have pronounced you but instead

You venture into a labyrinth of connotations creating thus

Confusion and misunderstanding that make it

Difficult for ideas to be transmitted intact?

Hope so! Thank you for "getting" the meaning, dear Andrea. You were, for me, one of whom the meaning would be "got" by!

The confusion comes when one is expressing an idea in a given degree but the other understands it in another degree of intensity. Thank you for your kind visit and lovely comment, dear Anne-Lise!

Language is just the audible and visual representation of our experience. I no way the word "pain" can make us feel the pain of someone else in the degree he has lived pain. We just imagine the pain we ourselves have been through. Thank you my friend for your kind comment and visit!

We can only transmit our experiences through language and hope that the other person had similar experiences in similar degrees so as his understanding to pay justice to what we tried to communicate in the first place , dear nette. Thank you for your gracious visit and fine comment!

The answer , my friend, Miraj, is: Each person translates every word he hears into his own experience. For instance ach one of us understands, hunger, or cold, or pain, or unhappiness in the degree he has experienced: hunger, cold pain or unhappiness! If one was never hungry it is impossible to understand hunger and so on, that is why it is difficult to communicate because denotation although one connotations are many. Thank you for visiting!

Let us utter the word orphan of which the denotation is having no parent or parents. If one is sixty years of age and still his parents live how is it possible to understand the meaning of that word in its entirety? It is impossible! So it is with every word which each one translates to his own experience in order to relate to it. Unfortunately though experiences are not of the same degree therefore the meaning eludes us and as a result we do not understand a thing in exactly the same way, although we use the same word.
