Words

Words were meant to be shared,
embraced, loathed at times,
feared, and met with trepidation.

Words release that power within us
we need to express in tactile whispers
or in loud climactic reverberations.

They are meant to charm, to soothe,
to pacify, to even stop that internal
clock ticking away elusive moments.

Words...
laid bare, exhuming the bleeding heart
with its rhythmic flow that exhilarates
to an innate beating of native drums.

When words enter the realm of poetry
they seek their own uncharted path
enlightening and illuminating the spirit.

They become their own reward,
caught between light and shadow,
imagination and creative exploration.

Wonderful description of words. Poets understand our relationship with them and the dance they lead us on. Love you dear friend. Suz

Depending on the subject, words can stir imagination like no other medium except perhaps music. As you have so beautifully brought out, words can trigger deep response, can get at means of expression we need for balance in our lives. The last two lines are great. Love, daver

Oh good, you have put it here. Glad to see this insightful poem over at Soup now! Connie, I saw where Karen had you as a poet of the month or something at Whispers? I didn't really look into it, but I want to congratulate you for that! (hurry and give me a verse of you walking up to the blarney stone, and I will work on a blarney stone kiss!!)
