Craig's Sapphic Stanza Contest   October 21, 2024

Snow continues toppling from darkling gray skies. And by dusk, the flurries will bank on the ground. Landscapes painted by Nature's hand, the artist Hallmarks of winter ~ Embers turn to ash; darkness gives up the night. Sunlight's shadows lengthen from pine and blue spruce. Melting ice is dripping from gabled dormers. Morning is frigid ~ Hushed, the silent world until creaking resounds Footsteps crunch and crackle on beds of hoarfrost Woolen scarves and mittens for warming cold hands Sleigh rides o'er hill sides ~

Good morning, Danny and thank you for prodding me to post this one. I was/am skeptical about the form, but you saw in my lines the beauty that exists through imagery. I appreciate your encouragement and know that you have my equal support on your Victorian 'Winter.' It's enchantingly written.

Dear Lin … this is so gorgeously atmospheric. What a wondrous winter scene you have so skilfully created. The reader is captivated by such vivid imagery .. such crisp sights and sounds that captures the essence of winter. The beauty and purity of winter. This is a new form to me too but I’m sure you will do well in the contest. Good luck. I loved it! Hugs and smiles :):)

Good morning and thank you, Christina. I got swept up into imagining I was living in that scene. Clearly, you were able to see the poem through my eyes. Thank you for such insightful comments.

Thank you, Jan. I spent quite some time trying to put myself into the scene at different times of the day that I felt as if it were my home, my family, my life. Thanks for noticing the word play. Hugs.

Dear Lin, I loved the painting and the style of the poem that goes with it. Your poem beautifully captured winter's essence, from the gentle snowfall to the crisp morning air. It took me to a serene landscape, and I visualized the subtle progression from dusk to dawn, creating a captivating rhythm in my mind. Ahhh the magic of a winter's day. Autumn Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Thank you very much, Daniel. I wanted the time progression to be evident but not disjointed. Your kind review lets me know that's the way you saw it.

Your words Lin have been soaked in experience and feeling...essential ingredients in a good poem. No counterfeit emotion here, pluuged direct into the mood with excellent observational imagery. Me likes. Take care dear Lin.

"soaked"... that's a great reference word for poets to use when writing, especially with regard to feelings. Thanks for always seeing what my eyes glean, Paul.

Reading the details on the form made me feel semi illiterate, yet you've met the brief with the appearance of effortlessness and achieved something so delicate and beautiful. All the best for a top win x

That remains to be seen, Dilly but thanks for your comments. I'll take "delicate and beautiful" as reward enough for having written lines where I felt I was actually part of the scene.

A poet’s poem for sure Lin, winter imagery is off the scale, yet written with poise and grace, these forms are difficult and need commitment to put together, you put in the work, and I hope you’re rewarded with a top place in Craig’s contest, cheers David

Thank you so very much for your review of this one, David. I felt as though I was walking through a blizzard, trying to keep my steps in the required rhythm and meter. Buried alive under 4 feet of snow, I may be when the results are in, but I gave it my best shot, prodded along with a bit of encouragement by a fellow brave poet who told me to do it.

I can hear the “Footsteps crunch and crackle on beds of hoarfrost” You did well! These are not simple to write! Hugs

Thanks, Kim. No kidding about writing this form. I dithered and withered over these lines for a few days.

I cannot comment about the form, but your choice of words to create imagery here are of a high poetic nature, so vivid it that you painted a picture here..

Thanks a bunch, Tom. I've no clue if it's correct, but I like the scene that was painted. Almost like Currier and Ives.
