Winning the Bid
I won these at the auction she said!
They only cost me six hundred dollars!
EACH? I screeched.
“No, silly, the pair.”
“I thought they started at $38.”
“They did, but someone kept bidding them up.”
Later that day I met her mother.
“I tried to get those mermaids for my daughter”, she said.
“But they went way too high. I had to drop out.”
I did not tell her who she was bidding against.
