Wild Knows Wild
The daddy’s eyes popped wide; he started to jump up.
His wife, a shaman’s daughter, lifted a finger to stop him.
It is okay, she whispered. Watch.
Sister Fawn walked to their toddler, Liney with purpose.
Liney was delighted with her new four-legged friend.
They communicated like baby woodland creatures do.
A deep cough sounded from the edge of the tree line.
Sister Fawn turned and trotted back across the lawn
Liney followed the best she could, but could not keep up.
Jack looked at his wife, the wise one, the Cherokee.
I bet that happened all the time to you, he said
She nodded. Not Sister Fawn though.
My totem is Brother Raccoon.
He was tame around me.
Do you think we’ll see more deer? The daddy asked.
She nodded. Plus one more thing, you have to realize.
What’s that?
The mommy smiled.
"Wild knows wild.”
They watched Liney clap her hands with delight.
Sister Fawn leapt over the fence, joining her mother.
