When She

When she is 4, she eats a popsicle,
Wondering what she will look like when she is older like her mom
She loves her family so much, never wants to leave them

When she is 8, she eats a popsicle,
Thinking about her friends
She wonders if they will stay with her through elementary school
She loves her friends so much, she never wants to leave them

When she is 12, she watches the popsicle melt
Too worried about how the calories will make her look
She wonders if she’ll ever be good enough for her friends now as the scissors reach her wrist
I won’t she thinks to herself

When she is 15, she doesn't eat popsicles anymore.
She wants to look pretty like the popular girls, they don’t have sugar
She thinks about how the popsicle would taste as the flame of her lighter touches her thigh
All she wants is to love herself, but it’s too hard

When she is 20, she eats a popsicle once more
She doesn't feel as alone, she has real friends
She realizes she was always good enough
She loves herself, more than anything

When she is 30, she no longer eats popsicles
She saves them for her kids
Hoping they never have to go through the same pain as she did
She loves her family so much, will never leave them
