When No One Reads

July 16, 2014- Inspiration for
 "When No One Reads"

When no one reads, keep writing
right now just might not be the right time.

Poets are currently considered
lowest of low, scum of slums
but that doesn't mean things will always be this way.

Be patient growing your poet trees
persistent,
doing it for the right reasons
dredge that sludge of truth stuck deep within your gut.

Get it out, get words down
just don't try so hard
and please pay no attention to those lacking appreciation for your goddamned art.

When no one reads
please...keep writing.

Thank you. . . I love this poem, and I love the inspiration it brings. Everyone has those moments of doubtfulness, and your absolutely right, in those moments we just need to keep writing.

Damn glad I found this honest and fine write! I am going to add this to my fav list because it represents the true poet's heart so very well.. You keep on writing my friend as shall I. I would also like you to know this, time is the biggest culprit IMHO. Some of us would like nothing better than to be able to spend 12 hours a day reading, writing and commenting. That amount of time simply is not there . Yes, I sometimes read and do not comment because I am trying to get in more reading time.

Yes, even if no one currently reads, one way or another, someone is bound to be touched by these "poet trees"-- planting seeds in their thoughts, that grow to other poet trees (even if it is one person, even our own selves, then heck it wouldn't have been in vain, right?).... I really like what you say here-- everything has their own time-- as long as we are happy with what we write, as you say, even if there are no readers, at least we still write, we can only grow from it.

Dear JS, There's a definite ring of truth in this poem. What the writer perceives as art may not appeal to an individual reader, but we learn to write for ourselves. Sometimes that produces the best work. I've been on vacation since July 1. Now I'm in New Jersey, have also been in Key Biscayne, Key Largo, Boston and New Hampshire. I'm sorry I haven't had computer access in most places along the way. Your poem is awesome! Love, Carolyn

With so many poets, and so many writes. They are all so worthy, but simply not for your sight. We all have to admit, that we can't write everything, but every single write, is entitled to sing. The words for we, written by thee, JS - nice one, and I hope it gets read and read, James :)

This is sage advice, indeed. Great write. Thanks for keeping us on the right track. Sometimes poets read, but don't comment. That doesn't mean the work isn't appreciated. They just may have their reasons for appreciating it quietly.

Very inspirational. It is hard to keep writing when screaming in the dark and no one is responding. But the scream is releasing something deep within and the only way it can get heard is to let it go. I applaud your poem :)

"dredge that sludge of truth" Love that line. I have waded through a lot of sludge to find that truth.

Oh you have hit the nail on the head with this write - the lack of comments especially over the last few months is depressing - I can comment on 50 writes lucky if you get 10 back. I have made suggestions how the site can be improved but so far no joy. Don't give up keep writing I agree. hugs Jan xxx

Jan, I try to scan the poems posted frequently but there are so many every day and they change so quickly as new ones are posted it seems a hit or miss deal at being read. The contest offer some great themes and a greater chance to connect with some of the poets on poetry soup, at least those who submit to the contests.
