When I Die

When I Die
Not a chance
I’ll say that
I should have spent
more time housecleaning
But I know I will say...

I should have listened more
To those voices deep within
What my soul wanted to explore
What my heart wanted to conquer
What my inner child wanted to do

I should have taken the time to
Sketch and doodle more
Paint more canvases with vibrant colours
Smile up at each blue sky
Allow gusts of wind to mess up my hair
Step out in each rain storm

Greet each flower that bloomed on my path
Listen to the chirping of wild birds
Pet each dog that looked up at me with eager eyes
Hug each friend that had a hard day
Take longer candlelit baths
Laugh at more silly jokes

I know I’ll wish
I had held your hand more often
Held you in my arms longer
Hugged you much more
Found more ways to say I love you

I really like this, Line-- in part (and forgive my ego) because it reminds me of a poem I wrote, 'When I Leave This Life'-- you got soul!

wow, another superb poem from you , Line. You are becoming one of my fave faves!! I think I am the person who DOES enjoy all these things, well most of them anyway. My problem is that I play TOO MUCH. All I want to do each day is take in the things I enjoy. My mom just wishes I'd pray and read the Bible

I like this-- you know how to use simple words to hint at profound truths-- am amazed how many people can't see that life implodes with meaning virtually with every breath they take-- congrats on your win!

Line, I really like this poem especially. When I Die is very cheerful and encouraging...a reminder of now. Like your poems they remind me of the messages of the famous and wonderful Erma Bombeck and the cartoonist who drew and wrote, was it "For Better or Worse", a cartoon about everyday elevated to where it should be...honoured...daily chats back and forth, meals, headaches, love. Your poems, for me, speak to living and loving while we can and taking the nerve to jump in, now.
