What Takes Your Breath Away?

The dark sky was creeping, stalking above me, And I was searching for any sign of subtle exit. I couldn't control the endless shaking of hands, Or my knees that wobbled constantly as I ran Towards what I considered, both now and then, To be the most likely safe haven, Or at least... Give me a moment to sit down and breath. The moment ends slightly quicker than a hiss And noises in the distance, Getting nearer, Urge me onward in the night as I see shapes From each and every angle of my vision. A whistling, piercing, agonizingly eerie Sound fills my ears, and I'm forced into Continuing on through the fire of my lungs. And the chase continues, but I'm slowing - The footsteps come in echos - goading Like a clap from such impatient hands as yours, Yet far more malevolent, and just as frightening. At distance, light breaks up from 'neath the ground, Like fingers slowly worm into a glove And sunlight clears the torment all around As eyelids crack - take in the morning love.
