What My Heart Kept

Dear friend, I thought the past would fade if I just turned away;
But something of your kindness found a quieter way to stay.

I called it sorrowful joy the smile that comes with pain;
A memory could warm my heart, then break it once again.

I brought you all my tangled thoughts, my laughter and my grief;
You listened, then you offered words that brought a little relief.

I called you once a rare gem; the phrase was all I knew
To say how much it mattered to be understood by you.

I tried to make my heart forgive the choices I had made;
But feelings keep their own account long after reasons fade.

Some days I blamed the distance; some days I blamed my heart;
It isn't easy naming what has pulled two friends apart.

I cannot stitch the years back whole or make the distance end;
But I can thank you for the gift of being such a friend.

Whatever else the years have changed, this much remains true:
I tried to leave the past behind. I never forgot you.
