Those “What if” sessions we indulge may rouse regrets we won’t divulge, awaken sensibilities, or help us set priorities. What if I could retrieve today one thing I’ve lost along the way, one object that was dear to me that I’d be overjoyed to see? I venture from reality and in a vivid fantasy, a box I hold contains each thing I’ve lost. I’ll search first for my ring. My high-school class ring symbolized, a milestone. When I realized through carelessness, I’d lost this treasure, I knew I’d miss that source of pleasure. I learned from this experience. I’ve been more careful ever since. Those lessons that come packed with pain, we’re much are most likely to retain.
