What I Took From My Dad

Growing up, my family was quite close. We’ve always loved each other very much. Those memories are what I cherish most, And though we’ve moved away, we still keep in touch. My siblings and I may not talk every day, But we’re there for each other when needed. And though there are times when there’s nothing to say, Not one of us has ever felt cheated. From oldest to youngest, it’s a ten-year spread, And we all lead very different lives. Our family has grown, and we all look ahead With nieces and nephews, husbands and wives. And then there’s my Dad, who is his own man. He means something different to each of us. Maybe our lives haven’t gone as he planned, But getting where we are has been worth the fuss. I don’t talk to my Dad as often as I’d like, But I do think of him quite a bit. I realize now that we’re a lot alike, And that’s something that I’m proud to admit. I took from him a few of his favorite things, But I really don’t think that he would mind. Like him, I work a lot from summer to spring, But I love what I do and the daily grind. I now listen to his music I used to hate And I repeat the phrases that he’d say. This is for you Dad, I hope you can relate. “What a character I’ve become, today.”
