My grandparents came  filled with hope.  They were not embraced, they were maligned by the prejudices perceived of Sicilian people.  They held fast to a dream despite the cruelty and hardship they faced, taking menial jobs, with menial wages; and with great pride and dignity, rose above the rancor, to become prosperous citizens, who were respected in their community.

I want to see the America, my grandparents saw; The promise of freedom, and justice for all. Where to be an American, a privilege, from "sea to shining sea", They left us a gift, to protect, our priceless legacy. Where constitutional laws were created; intended to be upheld, Not amended, for an egregious agenda. Where freedom of speech, was once our natural born right, Assembling in peace, without fury or fight. Where facts in journalism are restored, And politicians don't ignore, the voices of "We the People." Where a kaleidoscope of cultures, a human tapestry, Now, hangs in the balance, of fragility. Where history is not in the shadows of disgrace, It is the key to our future, to move forward and embrace. Where the anthem of our nation, brings us to our feet, And our pledge of allegiance, we all repeat. I want to see the America, my grandparents left behind, Where again, there is opportunity to find, "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." For "What You Really Want" poetry contest. A truly wonderful piece of writing, echoing what many believe is an assault on liberty! Well said Paulette!

Thanks for stopping by my page and commenting on this piece. I am very passionate about our country and the people who built it~our ancestors. I am troubled at what we have allowed it to be become. And yes, our liberty is at stake. Paulette

This is a magnificent work. The appreciation, gradeur and spirit of being an American, in one concise nutshell. You get a fovorite for this. Sadly I can only give you one. This is an outstanding write that needs to be in a National Publication. We have something in common: I miei nonni erano di Sciacca e Palermo.

Fine treatise on State of our Union, Paulette, I share a similar history with Irish heritage fleeing the potato famine of the late 19th century, eventually making their way to Chicago, with family legends still told around our holiday tables illiciting awe & inspiration, as many families do...

Hi James, Aah....you understand the pride of the legacy. A legacy we want restored where freedom is earned....not taken and destroyed. Blessings, Paulette

Thank you for commenting on "What I Really Want". Truly, it is a vision that I feel is slipping away; being replaced by entitlements rather than integrity....our country is self-destructing. Take Care, Paulette

You left me speechless with this brilliant piece! You remind me of “My Captain” Abe Lincoln. You have an exceptional way with words dear Paulette. Looking forward to read more of your poetry. You inspired me.

Hi JCB, I believe we have a mutual appreciation for each others work. I admire your work immensely, and I am flattered that you appreciate mine too. There is a lot of poetry that is raw, hard and callused that seems to be widely accepted;so it is refreshing to find creativity and beauty is still alive. Hail to INSPIRATION! Paulette

Great strong piece Paulette, telling how you feel it to be with good rhyme and flow with nice imagery too. As a Scot looking from across the big Atlantic pond can understand how you feel as we're in a similar situation here in UK not having confidence in those in power. Have a great day, Gordon

Hi Gordon, I appreciate your commenting on this piece. It was the hardest poem I have ever written, I was so emotional, I could have written a manifesto. It is hard to see the country that I love, is self destructing. Blessings, Paulette

Sadly, the USA has degenerated to a government peopled by those able to generate the most income to a political party with little or no concern for their constituents or the future of the nation, so I am quite impressed with your remarks! Aloha! Rico

Thank you Rico. Truly it is sad, I have so much angst about what is going on here. Like the way of other countries, where their strength became power and greed which leads to the destruction of a free and open society. God Help Us!

I appreciate your remarks, especially that this was probably the hardest poem I have ever written. I have so much angst about the future of our nation. I fear we may not survive the nefarious agenda being promoted under the guise of 'promise'????
