What Do You See
Why do you look at me so?
When you glare into my eyes,
is it defiance I see,
or tenderness mixed with caring
and, perhaps, a touch of mystery.
Your gentle eyes bewilder me
with the spark of the mid-day sun,
set against the cool of an evening breeze,
with the sheen of the moon
and twinkle of the stars,
they mesmerize me.
Are they a portal through which
you can set yourself free
to open your tender heart to me.
...Is that what you want me to see?
For long moments our eyes seem to meet,
not as a stare unfocused and cold,
but seeing each other with a meaningful gleam.
Your long gaze I hold in hope
that I find the real you
hidden somewhere deep inside.
...Is that what you wish to see in me,
my reality, the real me, the man I am,
or the man you want me to be.
Your beautiful eyes, that so intensely
watch me, mirror the image
that I wish I could be,
the strong yet gentle man
that captures your desire,
the laughter that hides deep inside of me,
the smile that only you can coax from my dreams,
but as I look closer all that I see
is the reflection of the ordinary me.
Yet, before you look away
I wish for there to be
a moment in my eyes
when you can see that I will always be
the one whose feelings run incredibly deep,
the one you can rely on,
the one who will be there for you,
and always will,
...if you but want me to be.
