Weeding the Community Garden
His body glistens in the golden sun
in youth his form solid as an ancient greek statue
He labors hard in the fields weeding so others may eat
wipes his brow from honest sweat
Summer's heat unmerciful
I to would go shirtless but my pale white gut
would blind out the sun that shone on it
Youth is fleeting, old hangs on and on and on
Yes he works three times my speed and smiles
that beautiful smile from his handsome boyish face
The ladies seem to notice
when I smile I am told to keep working
Volunteer for the community food pantry
The garden seemed simple enough
He stands and stretches and deeply sighs
all eyes upon him
Next week I volunteer in the kitchen
