We Spurned Their Love

We were off to school and oh-so-brave We spurned the love our parents gave But now that they are in the grave Too late we find their love we crave

There are many who don't appreciate their parents, Gershon. Once they leave this world, we wonder what might have been had we tried a little harder. Very touching poem, my friend. (Should the last word of line four be "gave"?)

Thank you so much for your comment, Carolyn, AND especially for the correction. That word should have been 'gave.' Thanks to you, now it is! Appreciate your help! :) gw

Gets me deep in my heart. Lots of things I wish I could say to my parents now, the thank-yous and the love I did not express when they were alive. Short but poignant poem, my friend. Meaningful read for everyone i am sure.

Thank you for your kind words, Joe. I'm like you -- didn't express appreciation or love when I was alive. Best wishes, Gershon

Perhaps "Honor your father and your mother" should be put back into the school curriculum... Of course, it wouldn't have to be taught as 'religion.' It's just been the 'way of the world' for millenia. Thanks, Tom.

Hello Gershon … I guess we need a little of hardship to appreciate the protection our parents gave us - thank you Gershon - Lindsay

Glad to hear that you'll be seeing your Dad. Mine passed away in 30+ years ago. And I never told him how much he helped me get through life. Mea culpa! :) gw

This is so sad - children don't usually appreciate their parents until they are grown, and sometimes it is too late to let them know-

Yes. It is so sad. It happened with me, and it appears that it's going to happen with two of my four kids. Hard to break these 'vicious cycles.' :) gw
