Watching the Word Parade
Words parade around the meadow and up a tree
I can barely believe that is where the adjectives went
I thought they would stay down here with the nouns
Verbs began leaping off of the flowers
Landing, falling, rolling, laughing, cavorting.
The adverbs were persnickety and irritated.
We cannot keep up with them they said
loudly, angrily, and irritably.
I rolled my eyes, watching it all unfold
wondering how I would gather up the prepositions
and begin the story. I knew they would be hiding under, the roses, over the cobwebs, around the lilacs, and above the trees.
