Walnuts and Peanuts

The walnuts and peanuts Both squirrels and birds Enjoy these different nuts Chipmunks eat both nuts There is always a battle for food Squirrels chase the birds away There is always a battle for food The squirrels eat both nuts Blue jays eat the walnuts Now the autumn begins The squirrels search for nuts They store it away for winter Making a pile high somewhere So I wonder if the squirrels Will remember their nuts Where they hid them for later When they will be hungry Squirrels do not sleep in winter They are seen searching for food In winter I never see the chipmunk Searching for their food Maybe they sleep through the winter

This is thoughtful, observant poem. Great job! Many of your poems tell a story (i.e., they are narrative). You can tell from the comments of others, this poem is very evocative for people.

A lovely poem full of imagery Darlene. We saw the cutest most friendly squirrels in Hyde Park London on a holiday one year. Pretty sure they remember where they hide those nuts. Smart little things ...Maria Hugs

Hello Edward Clark, you don not have too many red squirrels.! That is because they are in Canada. Do you get snow in England? Just wondering. Have a nice day my friend.

Hello Darlene … an education for me and in a delightful way. Have no inkling on squirrels and chipmunks, but I dare say they can be as cheeky as our possums down here - thank you Darlene - Lindsay

Hello Lindsay, squirrels do not sleep through the winter. some birds stay behind. Chipmunks sleep some time but retreat to their burrows but wakes every few days. Viticor told me this. Have a nice day my friend.

- Answer your question: pepper does not make the snow melt ... - but salt does :) - "Where the pepper grows" ... is a warmer place than Norway ... a place I want to go when winter comes :) - Just as your poem ends .... "Maybe they sleep through the winter" ... winter is not a time I like ... because of my fibromylagy ... maybe I should sleep through winter ... or travel to a warmer country - Your poem is lovely, Darlene :) - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

Hello Sunshine Smile, winter is not for me either. when it is icy I have a hard time to walk. My broken finger aches in winter so badly and it is the last finger to warm up in a mitt. Have a nice day my friend. Hugs. Darlene
