Valentine
Valentine’s straddling bikes, hiking it to the mall.
Youthful and carefree; passing trees in revelry
as the sun plays peekaboo through its leaves.
Half a heart, each. Each pounding the busy streets.
A flirty wind blows her hair; his face valentine-red.
Her curves, pumping pedals. His handlebar smiles.
It’s a long way, longer than the day. Moon’s winking.
In gratitude of the Irish tavern, the cream of the crop -
friends pick them up, (and bikes) cram them into the car.
Sweethearts nestled together in one seat, barely breathing
room. Hot and steaminess must be contained for present
company. The bikes can’t stay still in the cool of the night.
Arrival finds them hand in hand - palming, massaging.
It’s that day - for him to pull out chocolates and a ring.
That will be on their first anniversary. Today’s just hot.
