Unrequited Pursuit
UNREQUITED PURSUIT
Head, tilted provocatively to one side,
An open, almost-lascivious smile
Pointed at me darkly smouldering
Eyes, poured out with scented honey into
Eager, penetrated hands,
Held in supplication for too much
To be received from sacred insecurity:
I was yours to be the obedient servant,
Ready in attendance for what might come.
Then I awoke from the naked unreality
Of a wanderer's listless dream,
Confronted by an immovable present
Where you didn't exist.
Just a capricious phantom
Of the imagination you were,
Scratching at my fallen ways
To bleed them in plain sight.
I have forgotten the passing image
That used to beguile but became
Poisoned for every
Thirst-quenching well
That might have satisfied.
I rose up to stand confirmed
By renewed confidence in a future
That no longer included your boyish disdain
For lifelong commitment.
