Unfettered

Lately, perhaps due to aging,
I find myself thinking about
past pleasures;
the little things I'd all but forgotten.
Like my first walk in the woods,
and the feeling of being one with Nature,
unshackled from the hands of time.
Nature nurtured my curiosity,
before innocence was lost.
In my youth, I was oblivious to the truth;
feeling my way through a minefield of lies.
Every day was like an ongoing epic,
a continuous adventure, filled with wonder and play.
Once in a while, as I chase dreams through sleep,
I find myself perusing memories,
recalling a smile or a tear; usually both,
often simultaneously.
And I ponder on the fact that in my
isolated imaginary world,
I once lived unfettered and free.
And marvel that I spent the rest of my life
trying to recapture a feeling;
that I will never feel again.
