Notes About The Poem

Undergrowth With Two Figures - Van Gogh

A couple stands side by side in a woods
among the tall slender trunks of many trees
lifting high to the sky,
the unseen crowns of which
I can only imagine.

The man and woman’s feet
are planted on ground
wildly overrun by white and yellow flowers
which seemingly have bloomed
free as a breeze.

Dressed in black,
the man resembles a strange scarecrow
who has escaped his stake,
and his mate in her frock of green
might be a forest nymph who set him free.

I was wondering how each one would respond to this picture. It is so fascinating to see how many have reacted to it.(I read a few entries.) Andrea, your description suits well with the picture's spirit.

Andrea, this is fanciful and pleasant indeed. Your imagination did wonders with this. Hope you are well of course...and not wandering in the woods unless they are at least as nice as this one. Smiles!

I am glad you shared this one with us. I like that picture and have never seen it. I like the shades of blue to purple used on the trees. I think maybe it is daffodils that are used for naturalizing as the flowers. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Sara K

Your verse is rather compelling, Andrea. Maybe the couple's thoughts are running wild Ike the undergrowth or floating up to be lost among the disappeared canopy. Nice write:)

An interesting perspective - the end was different, but made the poem lovely
