Unbearable Beauty In Scarlett

I look at her picture ... she'll never grow old.
A feathered headband on her small, downy head.
The pain will lessen, that's what we've been told
but we've so few memories of a babe , now dead.

Scarlett of name, a moniker bold,
for such a wee thing, fragile and young.
She won't grow into the name, will never grow old.
Won't learn to walk or talk or ever have fun.

I look at her picture, tears brimming my eyes.
She sleeps so peacefully in repose.
They say time will heal but I believe it's all lies.
The grief that we feel, no one really knows.

Her unbearable beauty left scars on our hearts.
On the day God reclaimed her ... we all fell apart.

So very heartbreaking and sad, Francine, and I see from below, she was your precious granddaughter. I am so sorry for your loss...but happy that your well-written Sonnet made this short list of winners. Congratulations on that. Hugs, Sandra

I am touched beyond words with this one. I lost a brother at a very young age. Not like apparent losing a child here...but I witnessed the pain my parents did endure and pray earnestly I never have to endure it myself. Thank you for yet chronicling yet another aspect of life, however painful.

So touching, you have amazed us with the eulogy for this loved one. A moment of remembrance which needs to be framed along with the picture. Beautiful.

Dear Francine, your poem brought tears to my eyes. The reference to time healing is not accurate. There will always be some pain. My mother died young in 1984 and I still feel the pain. God bless you for having the strength to write such a beautiful poem for your great granddaughter. Love, Carolyn

I feel the pain of your loss in this work..A baby is so special and loved when invited into a home here on earth..I know that Jesus holds her in his arms for He said suffer little children to come unto me for such is the kingdom of heaven..As David said of his son from the marriage with Bathsheba, I can't bring him back but someday I will go to him..Thanks for the honor of placing in your contest...Sara
